40 Tamim Al Majd murals displayed at MIA Park exhibit
In a new crowd-sourced exhibition, Qatar Museums is displaying as many as 40 iconic ‘Tamim Al Majd’ murals. Located in MIA Park, the exhibit has aptly been christened ‘Tamim Al Majd: Celebration of Unity’.
The works almost all bear the same image of HH the Emir Sheikh bin Hamad Al Thani, and are covered with supportive scrawled messages in numerous languages by members of the public. These are just some of the thousands of similar portraits on display across the nation, on shop windows, car windscreens and inescapably, skyscrapers.
In a country where graffiti is hard to come by and heavily frowned upon, these murals present a rare example of organic political public art that has sprung from the masses and flourished. These murals have become a visible sign of widespread support for Qatar and the royal family in the current time of crisis, and will likely go down in the country’s history as a symbol of Qatari resistance and solidarity.
Ahmed bin Majed Almaadheed is the Qatari artist behind the emblematic portrait of HH the Emir, which is prominently displayed in varying sizes across the green expanse of the park by the drive up to the museum.
The exhibition was opened yesterday by Qatar Museums Chairperson HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. VIPs, the Qatar Museums leadership team and the families who donated the murals attended the event.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
