Wireless Connection Speed Question
I would like to know if any of you out there know how to increase your wireless internet speed. I am using a U.S. Robitics Wireless Modem. The connection speed is good at the main computer but I am only connecting at 54.0 Mbps on my laptop. If you know for sure and can help me please reply.
I know there have been all kinds of post about internet connections in the past, but I am too lazy to look through them, and I am not finding any help on the net.
Racer - Try checking the actual speed by double-clicking on the wifi icon in yout taskbar. Probably you have a weak signal (somewhere in the 14 - 20 mbps range). Trying moving around the house and raising the wifi router.
You could also try homemade wifi booster with an empty Pringles can. Google for more info.
Another option would be powerline networking. I saw a kit in Carrefour once. Powerline wireless boosters are available overseas.
Thanks for the help I will try and see if I can get it working better.
Another way of improving the signal would be to add an external aerial, which screws into the existing socket. Beware, some routers do not have removable aerials, and there are two different types for those that do. Best to take your router along & try it in the shop.
Otherwise, there is a very cheap and simple method of improving network speed and reliability. Its a long piece of plastic, with metal inside, and plugs into both your router and the PC. You can even get them in all different colours. ;-)
If the signal between laptop and modem is weak, the speed will drop. If the speed is 54 Mbps and you are still getting sluggish performance there might be two possibilities
a) the problem is between the modem and Qtel server. Connect your laptop to the router directly with a cable and check, if the speed will still be slow. If yes, bug Qtel.
b) if you have not installed security key on your wireless connection and it is open, you might have dozens of freeloaders using your wireless connection without your knowledge. This will drastically affect the performance.
Good luck!
The speed 54 is fair enough it shouldn't be slow the reason could be the wireless signal is weak to the laptop try to move laptop near access point and try or update wirless adapter driver
Check the specs of your wireless adapter. If it's a 54 Mbps adapter then you can't change the speed.
