Which car to buy?

Hi All,

HI have realised that I need a big car in Doha, not because I like them but because of self preservation. Now I dont like X5 or other german SUVs as I think they are too small so stuck with the big ones only.

That leaves japanese and american cars. I personally like the american cars for their look and feel, but been told that their parts are not easy to find and could be held up in garage for weeks/months at end for repair. While japanese cars are cheaper to fix and parts also easily available.

I am not looking for a new one as I have not intention to be in this dump for long term. My objectives are strictly tied to saving money for a fix period, and then im off, so I am looking for something second hand, reliable and cheap as possible.

Thinking of Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser/Prado from 2005 onwards in less than 70k. Is it reasonable?

Thanks

I am the one going for cheap car and yet I have ego? Really?

You've raised a good point about safetystandards of Germanscars but I have noticed big cars also give you a bit of street respect which helps in coping with driving here.

There is no need to be nasty but I hope you feel really smug and smart about yourself. Have fun.

its a shame that there is no option to edit your first post so you cannot defend much of what you have written earlier..

with a budget of less than 70k and the objective of saving money, you are not looking at any german car but rather some cheap used SUV to help your ego grow an inch since an inch is all you really have..LMAO

next time just say that you want a cheap big car in a limited budget..german cars are not big or cheap yet they are rated higher in safety standards globally..there goes your BIG theory :)

Try to read again. In OP I said I wanted a big car in Doha for self preservation and dont like german cars cause they are not big(ger) than their japanese and american counterparts.

So while your idea is stellar (no shame in driving a taxi TBH), it is just not feasible.

You dont like german cars as they are too small..you dont want to live in this "dump" for long..you want to save as much and looking for some cheap car..

german cars, saving money and cheap mentality doesnt fit in one sentence ;)

Just buy an old lancer or corolla and drive it to work and make money by offering taxi services to others..this is the best bet for a cheap like you :)

Acadian,

There is a premium to work for high risk/low quality places in the world. Doha being one of them. Simple. At least am not brown nosing like yourself.

You show a great degree of arrogance and disrespect for people here in Qatar. Most of the people in what you call a dump have got more courage and compassion than you display capable to understanding. It cannot be so much of a dump as you call it to bring you here! Who are you to dictate and judge another country and culture? As specially one that is lining your wallet. You don’t like? Go home!

Why do you think Doha is my personal ATM machine? Do you think back in England I was working for bread? I get paid for the work I do at competitive rates. Why do you think it is a privilege to work in Qatar?

I was quite ahead of the pack in my career back home, not some no gooder who couldn't cut the mustard and is thankful to be in Qatar. I offer my services and get paid in return. It is a simple business transaction, no emotions and no thankfulness. Just simple politeness which comes part and parcel of any business transaction.

I called it a dump because it can never be my permanent place, so I dont see myself in long-term view, and therefore do not want to shell out too much for buying a shiny new car here. Other reasons for calling it a dump (seriously do you want me to point them out?) The QL and rest of internet is full of it, as a start why someone born here and lived for over 5 years does not become citizen?

Hmmm, that's interesting....call Doha 'a dump', think of it as your personal ATM machine and then ask its people to help figure out a car for you?

For that price, better to go with a newer Pajero or similar. A 2005 LC or Patrol would be in horrible shape by now, because of how much it would have been used off road.
