What is EGO..?

alsboy
By alsboy

Most people think of the word Ego and think that it means your "arrogant" or you think that you are "better than others". Is that truly the definition of Ego? Is that the only example of Ego?

Absolutely not. Ego is an invisible shield planted around yourself to protect yourself from the outside world. Ego shows up in all sorts of ways.

Ego is being "shy" and not wanting to talk to people. Ego is fear of what others might think of you. Ego is self critical and refuses to accept compliments. Ego is a lack of trust for people because your trust has been violated. Ego is living inside of a comfort zone, because you are afraid of failing. Ego is thinking that everything you do is perfect or striving for perfection. Ego is taking the credit when it doesn't belong to you or not liking it when someone else gets credit. Ego is giving up on the persistence God implanted in you. Ego is being closed minded. Ego is not allowing yourself to learn and grow for fear of the responsibility that comes with that. Ego is not forgiving because you feel justified in your anger. Ego chooses to take offense to what others say or do. Ego is self righteous and critical. Ego is false humility. Ego is oppression and not wanting to move past the past. Ego is having to be in control of everything. Ego is thinking nobody can do it better than you. Ego is an inability to admit you need help. The Ego needs to "keep up with the Jones". Ego needs to appear like everything is perfect when it isn't. Ego is a victim. Ego is pride.

This is only a few examples of Ego. We all comfortably wear our Ego. We just need to make the choice daily to take the invisible shield off and be the true person God intended for us to be. He is in control, he knows our path, he is ready to take on ALL road bumps in our path. If we hand over complete control to God and not try to live it alone, our Ego will safely be left outside the doorway of our life.

In short, Ego is Edging God Out.

sandeepkadian..... there is no correlation between god and ego....and if god puts u into hell its not because of his ego.... god created u so he has the right to put u into hell if u go against his policies...

ur father punishes u if u do something wrong... does it mean that he is egoistic ???

ego is a state of mind resulting from personal insecurity..... a condition when one's mind cannot accept the fact the someone else can be better than you.... a state when one is over-concerned about his rank, position & power in a negative & dominating way.... such an insecurity comes to his mind when somewhere in his mind thre is a lil percentage of doubt on his potential..

another healthy discussion.... if i stay out all night to bars and discos, must blame ID.

turns my nose up above others coz i think im better than them, blame EGO

and when i look at alcohol and screams about it being a sin and looks at people who occassionally spends time in bars and discos as sinners then, super ego must be blamed...

whew!!

sir boston, that was an impromptu one...my grade is?

Actually the question was, who is to blame for what I do? My ID (instincts), my EGO (self created self esteem), or the Super EGO (put on me through education and religion). So to say, the individual is always a victim of either of the three!

By FranElizabeth• 29 Nov 2009 20:55

Hurrah. enjoying this.. so is there a difference between high self esteem and self confidence? Or is it the same thing?

Everyone needs to have an ego in order to be self confident don't they? I think that it's used in a derogatory sence for someone who can''t think BEYOND themselves and what everyone can bring to them (Or fails to..) But to have an ego can be a positive thing too.. surely?

I have read that already, iceberg metaphor mechanism by freud had its own formula for Ego that does nt mean that is the end. I just expressed my opinion about how I define ego in a given circumstance. In my opinion, if one is not clear about him or herself, then obviously may not know anything in any given situation.

Dear Friends,

There is a very thin line between self confidence & EGO. For eg. One can say that I can do this task and I will win, that is self confidence. But if the same person say that ONLY I can do this and ONLY I can win, that is called EGO & Over confidence.

Arrogance is a perverted form of EGO. When you are egoistic you are arrogant but when you are self confident you will learn and grow and share your knowledge with others with humbleness.

Id, ego, and super-ego are the three parts of the psychic apparatus defined in Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche; they are the three theoretical constructs in terms of whose activity and interaction mental life is described. According to this model, the uncoordinated instinctual trends are the "id"; the organised realistic part of the psyche is the "ego," and the critical and moralising function the "super-ego". As you can see, it's only theoretical constructs to help to understand. There is no "real" counterpart for any of them. It's a model. The atom is a model, too. It doesn't exist as the model suggests. It just helps understand. But don't go looking for a single atom. You will be disappointed.
