Wedding in Qatar

Watcher
By Watcher

Hi, I met a Chinese girl in Dubai and fell in love with her. I am a Canadian citizen working in Qatar and I have never been married although I have family in Canada (common law law wife & kids). I would like to know how can I marry my friend ? Where should it be done: in Dubai or here in Qatar ? What are the steps to be taken ?

I really appreciate any help from persons who went through this.

Dear tinkerbell10, thank you for your answer. I do not want to let down wife & kids because I am a responsible guy...I know that financially it will be something big...On the other hand, I can't imagine not to go with my chinese girlfriend...she said that maybe we should stay bestfriends because she does not want to hurt my family...My feeling now is that I want more than just bestfriend with her and I dont want to see the dream fades away...This is very tough times for me...

It is true I need luck and courage to face the situation...

No, I did not tell my family because I need more time to sort everything out...I am going to Canada for 2 weeks soon; so I will see how I feel and maybe I will get answers there...

Xena, thank God you voice out the virus that's been surrounding QL nowadays. (hijack, fooling around, making all jokes w the post and TS)

Well, watcher, i agree with Brit.

You should be able to sort out the issue first with your family before thinking of marriage.

You have a complicated situation.

My friend had a Canadian bf who, same w u, have common law wife and 2 children. But this guy, told my friend, he will never get married because of Canadian laws. Dont know exactly what was that. So my friend left him coz she felt the relationship is useless.

Xena said it right, to check w your embassy. As there might be a law that prohibits you due to your common law wife and children, or it may be very difficult for you in terms of financial support.

Well goodluck.

Have you already told your family in Canada about this ? If not, then perhaps, firstly you should sort that issue out..

Thank you Xena, you are right: after 99 replys yours is the most useful...I will check with Canadian embassy. I know well all the consequences if I choose to go with my chinese girlfriend...I can assure you I never thought to fall in love at 45...I can't help it, the feeling is really strong...I have to think very seriously about it.

sure there is some legitimacy to your claim... as far as I am aware, if there is no marriage certificate, there is no claim....

In South Africa, a common law wife of more than 5years is rightfully entitled to a "divorce" estate, but thats it... no marriage certificate, no court divorce since there was no legal paper stating marriage. Complicated I know.. but this guy has stated he wasn't married to the lady... and its unfair that everyone just jumps on the bandwagon and starts to criticise without knowing the facts...

He and his partner could have been apart many years... she might even be contemplating marriage to someone else... I just wonder when QL became a site for the righteous and judgemental and ceased to be the helpful site it once was...

Not one person gave him any kind of decent answer except for me... now out of 99 posts, thats really bad odds!

Actually, Xena, in some places "common-law" marriage means just that - a legal marriage. It depends on the jurisdiction. He may need to check and see if he is really married according to the laws of Canada befoe diving into another one!

in Western countries, and UKEng.. I am surprised you don't know this terminology, a Common Law wife means he lived with someone (for years) without marrying her and as he stated he has kids with her...

For goodness sake, all he asked was if he could marry someone he has met...

WK where are you? This is a love forum thing... don't you know that there are many issues like this... someone doesnt marry someone they are with for years, break up and then they meet the person they do want to marry soon after... where have you all been?

Watcher.... the best thing is to go to you embassies and see if they will marry you... some will, but some won't unless you are both the same nationality, example, the South African embassy will only perform a marriage if you are both South African....

Otherwise, go and get married somewhere else and return to where you want to be... here or in Dubai...

Heaven help any of you guys who discover your marriage or common law marriage is no longer what you want it to be, decide to leave your "spouse" and then meet someone else... these things happen!

Love is a Word that any one can say I love you this,

some folks use this word for many reasons .

But do we know what love is .

You can only LOVE when you Put the Word to action .

hope he knows what he is doing cause remember the children

they need their father.

Oryx.. the middleast with all its middle age (young) men must be in paradise with all these asian beauties falling for them left right and centre.

So I blame the middleast culture for allowing middle age men and young girls to their country for this to happen.

Oryx accidents do happen!. there are many young filipinas here in Qatar who are single and have children back home!

I guess in Canada (and west in general) one has to stay with someone for many years and have kids only to realise that he did not love her and yet one can meet a young asian girl in the middleast and fall for her. Love changes with life?

A stringent requirement under Canada's bigamy law in which the Crown has to prove the man had left the country with "the intent" to take a second wife.

If your 1st wife can't prove that, then you're a free man :-)

Colt45 it's bigamy only if the other wife knows. One here , one in Canada. He'll just shunt between the two.

As for the Chinese girl, once he finishes his use-by date, or she gets her precious Canadian passport, she'll kick him out the door.
