Hi There

We are planning to move to Doha and with three kids, we are thinking of getting a domestic help, Maid to help us from our daily activities.

Can you please advise as:

1) which maid will be suitable , ie: Philipino, Srilanka, Indonesia etc..

2) Shall we simply go to the agencies and listen what they say?

3) Any suggession for selection of agencies , maid and any advise

4) What is maid salary?

Thank you.

If you replace maid with WIFE or Husband it sort of becomes a funny thread.

i dont have a maid but am planning to hire one at the end of Jan, when her employer leaves to return home. She is presently earning qr 1,800 per month, she also gets all toiletries and clothes, plus whatever she needs from the supermarket and an allowance for mobile phone. Her employer tells me she has a couple of cleaning jobs too, which she may loose as we are living at the other end of Doha. Her employer says its normal to give 2 months vacation every 2 years and that we will be expected to pay her Air Fare back to Manila for this in addition to her holiday pay. Is this correct? I ask out of interest and not by way of avoiding it.

If the wages of the maids are around 700 QAR to 1000 QAR,if they agreed to it,then ok,at least don't let them work 24 hours a day and let them eat 3 times a day and treat them as humans. If the employer is generous,it's up to them to give extra amount.

I've heard a lot about refrigerators being locked so maids can't get food..:(

I even saw a maid together with her employers in a mall. The whole family is eating at an expensive restaurant while they let the maid stand beside the table without any food for her. My heart broke..:(

Well no harm in being a little generous and paying them decent wages. You cannot pay them peanuts and expect them to work like the maids that work for the Queen of England or the King of Spain.

My AdVice to you, look for agency not just one or two then first you have to ask the maximum wages here, bcoz so far there is new role in Qatar regarding hiring helper, you must to be aware of that,we heard many helper scapes from their sponsor even they got good salaries and if you have kids,my suggestions better you look for a helper has background working with kids or married with kids at least she knows how to handle and manage about taking care the house as well as kids, regarding salaries here its up to your good heart of how much you gonna give. Some workers here as helper doesnt have day off and i feel sad about it.above all what im telling here, better go to agencies and ask any cv's.Good luck and hopefully youll find a best helper and you will treat them to the best.

TB - don't worry about her, she is clearly one of these people that does not want to feel guilty about paying her 'maid' a pittance. Such people are to be ignored.

wow - what is going on here???

Firstly, yes people do pay as little as 1000- 1500QAR a month, however this is a self perpetuating level. The more people in these forum topics say it is the norm, the longer it will remain so.

This is not a decent or acceptable amount to pay someone who probably works at least a 50 hour week. I certainly pay my nanny (note I do not call her maid) a lot more than this and she has 2 days off a week.

I have been criticised by other people that I am spoiling it for them by giving my maid an inflated salary and if I do it they will have to pay more to their maids.

Please people, pay your domestic help (or whatever you want to call them) a good salary and if you say that you cannot afford to pay them well, then you can damn well pick up after yourselves - the age of serfdom is over.

A decent days wages for a decent days work!

UK..I know many people hired that certain nationality paying that amount...and they said its now 400$ and once they renew the contract they will have to pay that much.

Mine was not that certain nationality and I paid her more than what her govt fixed, which I thought is less…Her salary when converted into her currency was 30,000/-

When you pay lesser than the standard rate they tend to run away...

FS no one pays the fixed rate per the Embassy guidelines, I think a certain nationailty their goverment has fixed $300 or $400 per month.

Now it does not include any fair tickets or food or any consuambles good. Now if any one will sponsor a maid through the Agency which majority of the people do then over a 2 year period they would have paid lot more than what the Embassy or their government has suggested.

UK.. as Pixie said... embassy has fixed a rate... you dont have to pay more than that...I am not saying 2.5k is a realistic salary...that doesnt mean that she can assume that someone is a maid.

Maids should be paid 700 to 1000 considering thats how much a labourer on my site is getting for working 14hours a day in the sun 6 days a weeks.

Even lots of ppl working in the office do not get 2500 let alone maids.

So FS and Tinker you are really inflating the maids wages here!

An English teacher who doesn't know that a sentence after a period begins with a capital letter? - I doubt it, FS.

Each embassy has fixed a rate for maids, the normal range is 900 to 1500.

Getting a maid can be a tiresome and frustrating process, especially if you are looking for someone who will not only help you with chores, but also keep an eye on your kids. It is a matter of luck. 1 - Filipino maids are considered to be more educated and intelligent, clean and obedient. But it is a matter of personal preferences. Nationality does not matter if a person is good at work and you can trust him/her. 2 - I would not advise to listen to the agencies, as bringing maids to the country is their business. Very often the applicants’ CVs are fake and they never had previous experience in their home countries. So, you should listen to your 6th feeling and use your common sense while dealing with agencies. You should know your rights in case you want to return the maid etc. 3 – Lots of agencies can be found on spot, just go there and check the Cvs. From personal experience – RETURNED maids (and you can find such at the agencies) in most cases are really not good. Don’t trust the agents saying that the maid is good BUT just the previous employer was bad. It is a waste if time. 4 – Salaries vary here from 900 QR up to 1500 or more. Hope it can help somehow…
