Qatar Career Fair 2011

There is some misconception among people that this is meant for Qataris only. I was there yesterday and found that there were no restrictions on entry for expatriates. However, some companies made it very clear that they will entertain only Qatari visitors. Overall, the crowd was good and it has all the makings of a very successful event. If you are planning to visit, please do so and keep the apprehensions at home.

Thank you for the clarification

My perspective on the career fair that it's an expansive shiny facade by local businesses to show TPTB that they are on track the Qatarization scheme

While it does well in recruiting new graduates & gives advice on available scholarship to students , it doesn't really address the real challenge which is disguised unemployment in government entities & giving a second chance for early retirees

I don't agree with this comment of bashing. That was not the idea. I came across a lot of poeple outside the fair yesterday who were not planning to visit just because they feared that they may not be allowed in. Well, the doors are open and it is a nice opportunity for expatrites to see how a nation can care for its people when the neighbouring counries are experiencing unrest. Guys, a job is not what one should live for. Imagine, even if each visitor is given a job at the fair regardless of nationality, they would still want to visit the next fair looking out again. By the way, I have personally comes across a number of Qataris who are driven by commitment, hard-working and can compete with expats. Efficiency is not a matter of passport.

'give respect and take respect' seems become absent these days, what ever the nationality only few people know how to manage the money as per my experience, every one is in a spending habit

Good for you maha. Then you of all people should know the problems of poor personal financial management that has led to the personal debts that plague this country and some of the awful larger financial deals that have been made over the years by your countrymen.

I met many expats as well as locals with high level of education, however, when it comes to make decisions, they are afraid of making it due to lack of confidence and systematic demotion by others,so stand up for your post or do not take it in the first place.

Sorry, Genesis. My comments are not meant to bash in earnest, just poke a little fun. The Qataris in my office found it amusing, but they are not the sensitive sort and face the uphill struggle of convincing people that they are good financial analysts and not window dressing (they are, in fact, excellent and have the credentials). I made fun of the Scots too (part of my own history), just for balance.

You of all people know that sound fiscal management is not a strength amongst the vast majority of nationals, and I found the text amusing. It's like bragging about having hired a bunch of Americans to play on your cricket team. I know why they sent it, but the double message is funny.

Relax Genesis, no one is bashing Qataris here...we all know they are capable of hard work, putting in long hours, making smart decisions and keeping the people in this country happy!

Who is complaining?

By smoke• 11 Apr 2011 11:17

krap! I'm married too..guess someone else will have to tell her she's cute and to keep smiling :P

Sorry, Smoke. I am married and I don't want her to get the wrong idea and stop smiling ;-) You'll have to handle that one yourself.

Ahh then could be the same lady...next time you talk to her tell her some random customer said she's cute :P

If she is the one I am thinking of I believe she is Yemeni but has lived in Qatar for a long time. Excellent and friendly customer service is rare in this country, so I routinely try to strike up a conversation with anyone who provides it and make a point of singing his or her praises when the opportunity arises.

The objective of the fair is to showcase local companies & educate students not for instant recruitment

2486 out of 43386 applicants were recruited in last year's fair

http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/147836-only-57pc-career-fair-applicants-get-job-offers.html

I see there is great change for recruitment of young expatriates in places like QMA, DFI and some QF civil organization

So don't hesitate , and go there

She's not??? I'm talking about the one that handles the CC payments. Damn! What is she then?

Exactly LP.

Maha--the 54% of the employees are NOT the real managers of the money. You would know that if you are really a banker beyond the clerk window (lol!). And obviously the government and the major corporations fundamentally disagree with you, otherwise they would not really on expats to manage the financial sector. So it seems you are in conflict with the ruling ethos. If you send me your banking details, I will send you the funds for a one-way ticket elsewhere.

There is a cute Qatari Lady working at Mashreq Bank, the one next to Gulf Cinema. Now the only reason i mention this is coz she's the first Qatari Lady, that I've met that actually serves you with this cute little smile that you actually want to go there and give them your money :P

I got a text from QNB yesterday announcing its pleasure that it has achieved 54% Qatarization and inviting me (if I am Qatari) to stop by their display for a job.

This makes me a bit nervous, as I bank with QNB. Generally speaking, Qataris are not great with managing money--hence all the complaints about crippling personal debts and heavy reliance on expats to manage government investments, finances of the wealthy, and the financial sectors of large development and investment companies. If they were renown for handling money well, like the Swiss, then expats would not be needed for this segment. It's similar to a fine restaurant advertising that it has hired a slew of Scots to cook for them (nothing against Scots, and I personally like haggis, but Scots cuisine is not celebrate and fine dining around the world).

To clarify: the Career Fair can also (and it should otherwise it will be empty) be attended by non-Qataris; however the job openings are for Qataris only (as announced in Oryx FM radio station).

On the other hand, don't get your hopes up as the career fair is aimed at getting young Qataris into meaningful jobs.
