Public Transport in Qatar?
By timeless_dreams •
I don't drive so am pretty much reliant on public transport. I need to travel from Umm Ghuwalina to United Nations Street for work and also just getting out and about in Doha.
1 - Will this be easy?
2 - what modes of transport are available?
3 - Is public transport safe for a single female?
4 - What is the cost of public transport?
Any advice would be massively appreciated!
timeless_dreams, It is very hard to find a Karwa taxi. There are plenty of private taxies though. It is better to avoid them; they might not be very safe. They are illegal anyway. The ideal solution is to get a car. Doha without a car is a nightmare, especially in summer. Till you get your driving license, you should make arrangements with Karwa (Qatar Taxi Company) to give you pick and drop services on a daily basis. This is the safest option. I used this service a few years ago, it wasn't bad. United Nations Street is 15-20 minutes drive from Umm Ghuwalina.
Some numbers would be awesome - thanks!! Is the distance between Umm Ghuwalina and United Nations Street far? Is looks fairly near on a map but wasn't sure.
Thanks, that's a massive help and also really worrying haha! I'm sure I'll manage once I get there and figure things out though :-)

I cant comment on ur first question, im also fairly new here (one month). I do drive but dont have car yet so facing same thing as u. Dont wanna be bearer of bad news but from my experience ive had a lot of incidents regarding taxi's and ppl trying to pick u up in street (illegal private taxi). Its very safe, that I dont doubt. There are busses here and taxi's, however Ive not tried the bus so far. Taxi's start at 4 riyals, with minimum fee of 10. My trip never reaches 7 QR but u still have to give 10. The problem here is, taxi's dont wanna start their meters, so you sometimes have to be weary, and make sure they do, otherwise you get the types that try to charge more by arguing with you. One thing is, if they dont put the metre, your trip is free, although Ive never been able to just get out without paying :-). You will find Qatar relatively expensive, so prepare yourself, transport average fares, but i feel more expensive than Dubai still. Its definately safe, but take care when ur flagging down taxi's. Just a word of warning...some guys try to pick you up in the street by stopping to offer a lift, or a car will approach you, say taxi but they dont have a metre. Better stay safe and use the legal Blue taxis here. Good luck to you, Im sure you will enjoy the experience overall. All the best!
