hi everybody,
you may have read about a rent scam in the gulf times on thursday -
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=280899...
Here is the actual time line of events, please beware and do not get duped -
1. We sign a perfectly legal contract for 2 years, pay 2 years rent upfront. We have all documents clear including the agreement between the owner and the real estate agent where it clearly states that this agent has been given the right to sublet, the property area and ID nos of both parties.
2. We live out 14 months of our contract period (during this time we learn two things -
a) the owner comes around three or four times after 9 pm and tries to make a nuisance of himself, brings his kids along. we tell him we all have a legal contract. he tells us he has filed a case against the estate agency. we ask the agency and they tell us that they are just witholding part of the payment because he is demanding money without keeping his part of the agreement.
b) (this may be irrelevant) the entire area has been bought over by qatar foundation and will be demolished sometime next year
3. on the 18th of march, an old qatari man comes to our door saying he is from the court along with a policeman and woman who distance themselves from everything. there is a sudanese man who cannot speak a word of english. The old gentleman tells us he is from the court and we have to vacate the premises. i tell him we have paid 2 years rent and he is surprised by this and talks in arabic to the sudanese guy (who by now i understand is a manager of sorts of the real owner). he then tells me that "al hajri (our estate agent) is a thief, make a direct contract with the owner" i ask him what about our money. he just repeats what he said. i ask him for the eviction notice, he says he will come another day with the police and give it to us. THEY NEVER TURN UP AGAIN.
(i musnt forget to mention that the court ruling was 31st january, the owner sends his people 18th march thus giving us no chance of appeal)
4. we contact al hajri, they agree that they have lost the case (we obtain a copy of the court verdict. they say they cannot pay us immediately but in parts. We say we want our money immediately as stipulated by the contract. they say "we are not paying anything, take us to court, we have so many cases that we are fighting, we dont care,"
5. Meanwhile the owner is now presurising us to sighn a new contract with him. We negotiate. We had no watchman all through the 14 months, a few days before the "people from court" visited us, an employee from al hajri - started living there . We told the owner that he must be evicted as we want a watchman and we would not sign a new contract till this is done. his manager said "i bromise to god that we will get him out". Three days later, he calls us to sign the contract but is still dilly dallying about the illegal tenant.
6. our legal advise says we have minimal chances of getting a stay order as the verdict is final and the appeal period has gone.
7. We are continuously going to check about our money, the company - CONSULTANT DECORATION AND TRADING - their website - www.al-hajrigroup.com , pls check this out, they have listed all their contacts and all their places for rent. they are delaying and giving us excuses.
Last night some people from another compound owned by him having read the article called up the office and were told that the newspaper article was wrong that we had some direct problems with the owner. they came up to our compound to confirm the story.
8. i have posted this so that people be aware of this company and do not rent from them. Could anyone (with legal knowledge please) post any advice that would be helpful to us.
Also anyone renting with al hajri, try to end your contract asap saying you are leaving BEFORE u find out that they have scammed (or are in league with) the owner and u have to wait in line to get your hard earned money back.
Can we file some sort of petition? or is that impossible in qatar?
and yes, i have been reading QL as a guest for 3 years but have just registered to post this - for any sceptics.
We have also been screwed by the same company... if you want to get together and work in some way to nail these ******** pm me.
Kellie
thanks will explore this option
Hi,
You just described our rental situation 3 years ago. Makes me wonder if our rental company changed their name.
Fortunately for us, our rental agreement finished at the same time as the ownership transfer so we did not lose any money. We signed a new agreement and all has been well since then. But, some of our neighbors had lots of money with the previous rental company. Here's what they did to salvage some of it: they went to the police and reported what was happening and showed them the court order that talked about the ownership transfer. They reported to the police that the real estate agent would not return their money. The police made a report and our neighbors took that report to their bank and had their post-dated checks canceled. In order to cancel post-dated checks, you will need a police report.
Hope that helps.
