PC Overheating
The problem is since a week ago whenever i turn on my PC i get weird sounds from the power area of my PC and the PC doesnt remain open for more than 5 mins and simply turns off as if someone has plucked the power cord. One year back i got its power circuit changed due to a slight short circuit. And after about 8 months i started having this problem when i took it to the shop the salesman told me that there is some problem with processor fan and it costed us 110 riyals for changing the fan bt still after bringing it back the problem was there after checking we found out that the Fan speed was set to SLOW.
Again after 6 months the problem has again started, the PC starts up it shows the windows clearly all the data is there for like 3 mins but extreme noise is coming from the PC and then it turns off by itself. Im not a hardware kinda person so m not sure what the problem is if anyone could advise me on this and also guide me how to handle with the shop person as here when people find out that u dont know the stuff they try rob ur pockets and do nothing.
Really need help in this matter soon PLEASE!!! as im a student and really need to work :(
Just clean ur pc with Blower.
Well thanks alot guys but the problem was very minor. It was just the power cable which was creating problem :(. I have changed it and it is just fine :D. Yuppy :)
Power Problem...the only thing that can heat up in 3 minutes is the processor. The PC detects the overheating and shuts down.
1. The CPU fan & heatsink is not touching the Processor to cool it.
2. The Pc is drawing more power from the Power supply than it can handle. Your powersupply should have a rating 450Watts if it is a P4.
3. The onboard battery cell is loosing life. Change the CR2032 Cell on the Motherboard. (Should change the cell once in 3yrs).
Extreme noise is just the noise of the fan desperately trying to increase its speed in order to cool the processor ....thereby drawing more power from the already overburdened power-supply.
400 Wats power supply should cost you around QR 60 to QR 80 from Sofitel (Mecure)Hotel (Hardware stores.)
If the PC turned off by itself, then it's a processor problem. Check if the processor fan is working properly, if it's spinning, if the fan cable is going down into the fan way and stop it functioning. If there is a power problem, then it won't boot to windows.
Try if you can access the Bios settings to check the CPU temp. Some of the motherboards will show that, if the temp is normal then your problem might be because of the PSU. If youe mother board does not, then install this software on windows and it will show you the CPU temperature:

When your windows shut down, the next time you start the PC and windows boots, do you get any kind of error messages? If that's the case then most probably the problem would be the PSU.
Open your PC, check if everything is connected properly and that there is no dust around the fan. Check the heat sink of the processor, there is a substance between the heat sink and the processor. Sometimes if it get dried, the CPU will start overheating.
Try replacing the PSU or make a test if you have an extra one to make sure that it's the problem. Maybe the replacement PSU is not supplying your motherboard with enough power or it's already failing.
Don't go back to that [sorry for the term] thief who charged you 110 Q.R for changing the fan as the cost of it will not go beyond 50 in the worst cases. You can always get it for something between 25-45 Q.R.
Power supplies would not cost that much and you can get some for 45 Q.R or Max. 60 Q.R
Avoid switching the PC on and off if problem would still be unsolved.

Your Power Supply Is Faulty!!!
That is where the high pitched sound is coming from!
Replace it ASAP, or it could fry your mainboard! ...also, since the power supply is faulty, check the Capaciters in the upper left by the processor to make sure none of them are bulging/swollen or look like battery acid coming out. If there is, then you need a new mainboard as well.
Drac, the fans sitting on the CPU cooling unit also break down. The computer shuts down, resp. "freezes" if the CPU is not cooled properly or if the rpm of the fan doesn't read to specs.
The buzzing could also be a fan that's misaligned or with dust that has gotten into the motor - both of which will slow the fan down.
After identifying which fan is buzzing, replacing it would be the best option. Putting a drop of very very light oil into the motor may provide an interim solution.
If its your PSU that's making the noise, it's possible that the fan isn't spinning as fast as it should. As Magic Dragon told you, replacement would be the most prudent thing to do (there are potentially some nasty capacitors in the thing - you wouldn't want to give yourself a shock poking around inside it).
.
If the CPU is overheating, it probably has nothing to do with the power supply.
Clean out all the dust and then run some burn-in programs(http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/CPU-Burnin.shtml , http://www.pc-diagnostics.com/pc_diagnostics_tools/pc_certify_burn_in.shtml), and/or run memtest (http://www.memtest.org/).
In this climate a lot of dust collects on the fans of the PSU. I regularly exchange the PSU once a year. That's the best you can do. A 450 Watts PSU will cost you around 60 to 70 Riyals. A better one maybe 150. But it will also die after a year or so.
