OK, I'm an idiot (but you're not)

As of last night my PC laptop will not connect to the internet. I haven't used the wireless feature since my husband reset the router with a little pin thingy and it no longer "authenticates" my home wireless connection - I've been using a 10 meter cord plugged into the modem (router?) My husband's MAC desktop is also connected by cable to this device and works just fine. What did I do? What should I do? I get a TCP/IP message but I've no idea what that means. Could anyone explain in VERY simple English and do it so I can make repairs without screwing everything up permanently? And yes, I've re-booted everything and clicked "repair" on whatever menu said to click on it for the internet connection.

yeps had a similiar problem with a wireless router i dont understand them they just work for a few days then start giving problems, perhaps its vista and all those security policies. Changed the name of the router and it started to work again. Hmmm

No, I don't think so. My husband reset the router and it changed the wireless name back to linksysM. If I were on another network it would still show mine as well and it only shows one available network at 100%. But thanks, I'll check it out.

i had a similar problem with my pc and mac laptops a while back. the mac would recognise the router and the pc wouldn't. To resolve it i had to re-install the router with a new name etc.. and then re-connect the computers..try this and see if it helps. If not you could just scrap the pc, the mac is much better.

Please post the message regarding the tcp/ip, It will help us solve your problem. Another solution is to enter a static ip address and dns if your router/modem dhcp service is not working. IP address, DNS,gateway and subnet mask information can be found on your husband's pc ( My husband's MAC desktop is also connected by cable to this device and works just fine.) IP address is in this format 192.168.1.? replace the question mark w/ the number between 2 - 254. Just be careful not to duplicate the ip address of your husband's MAC desktop

I understood that the internet isn't working even when she's connected by cable (so it's nothing to do with wireless)

This may seem like the dumbest solution but... if your laptop is like mine there is a wireless button on the top of the keyboard bit. Perhaps it is something like this? My toddler touched it and turned off my wireless, hubby fixed it and I felt stupid.

if he had reset the router, you must setup it again: connect your pc to the router by cable (a top-end one could have a usb connection). Open your internet browser and go to 192.168.1.1 (standard factory default adress for routers) If you are lucky you will not need a password. If not, you must find the pass on web (search on forums or send an email to the manufacturer).

Once opened the page you will have to follow a menu for seting up your network. But here, again you will need some knowledge about networking.

Good luck

When you're connected to the modem by cable, can you see the SpeedTouch configuration page when you type http://192.168.1.254/ into the web browser?
