need immediate help to find a new job

Dear Department of Human Rights,

Here's my story!

I was contracted to come to Doha to work in a girls independant school as of October 1st. After I got here the school refused to sign a contract with me and changed my job duties wothout telling me. I was hired to be an EnglishTeacher paid with a good salary.
After I got here to Doha it changed to teach four English classes/English Coordinator/MYP Coordinator all for the same salary. I advised the principal of the school this was all to much for anyone person to do.

After the first week and alot of talking to change the situation. I was told because I complained that I was wrong and the job changed to teaching 4 classes and MYP Coordinator. Ok! a little better.

But after the 2nd week the school decided to make a trip to Paris for a conference and for myself and 3 other people to attend. At the last minute I was made to register for the conference fill out visa forms and expected to get them from the French Embassy even for a non Qatari person and also to book travel arrangments and book and pay for flights for everyone.

We made the trip on November 6th and returned and this week I was told that I was no longer needed. Because they hired a person from England to do my job.

I am an excellent teacher with alot of skills and now because the school is not paying for my accomodations I have been stuck here in Doha since October 1st paying for very expensive hotels. So thank you for taking the time to listen to my story as I am in need of some help to pay my Salary for this month, all hotel biils and transportation charges while working at the school plus personal expenses and flight ticket home.

Best Regards,

Cynthia Hezog

Dear Mandi,

I went to the Labor department today and yes I was sent a contract unsigned and yes I had a visa from the school however it was cancelled when I went to the Paris conference for the school...Oh lucky me so now I have a tourist visa.

They cancelled me without notice so yes they owe me return airfare and salary for this month.

Finding another job should not be impossible and yes I want to be compensated for my housing cost, transportation cost and my salary hopefully for the rest of the year inshallah.....I saved all the emails and the labor department accepted to file the case!

Thanks,

Cynthia

Dear Cynthia, I am so very sorry this has happened to you. I'm not lawyer, but I have lived in the Gulf for a while and know a little bit about employment and contracts. And I want to get your plight to the top of the QL queue to get others' advice. First, do you have a contract? If not, you may not be able to claim wrongful termination. Can someone help on this point? And are you under the school's sponsorship? Do you have an RP? If so, I would believe that the school would owe you a return airfare. Of course, your salary for the month you did work should certainly be paid.

I guess the question may come down to - is it worth it to stay and contest this if it is costing you mega bucks while you do so? It is not fair, ethical or moral what has happened, but you may not get the legal compensation you are looking for. I'd not be too hopeful about housing and expenses for example. Again, someone chime in here. I'm not talking about deserve, I'm talking legalities. Would it be best to cut your losses and chalk this up to an unbelievably bad experience? Again, I'm so sorry for your troubles, maybe someone else can give better advice.

Mandi
