my NEC DVD+RW ND 6650A- can't read DVDs anymore
By shavonne clements •
My DVD Burner was doing fine, until it stopped reading DVDs.
1. Still can burn though
2. DVDs I burnt can still be played in a DVD player.
3. My Dvd 'sometimes' can still read Some types of DVDs (original DVD). But the ones i burnt( even the ones i did months ago), failed to be read.
Have to send this to Reddington, as per advice of Jarir Bkstr. But do you think this will take ages (read: is it better to buy a new DVD burner)
I tried having it cleaned (via lens cleaner)- still no luck
Anyone might know a solution here?
Merci
ShaV
You mean that the new laptop did not detect the external HD? Strange .. Did you try to open the 'Computer Management' under the 'Administrator Tools' and look into the 'Disk Management' to see if you can see it? If this is the case then assign it a new letter and it would open. If you attach the EHD and can't hear the Hard Drive at least working .. then it would lead us to another to options. Your Hard Drive is dead or the encloser of that hard disk need to be replaced ..
Did not get the complete idea .. hope to hear from you again .. you can also try to change the USB cable .. it might be unusable too ..
Best Regards
King Ed, the headache and occasional heartache of PCs. My sister got an external hard drive to back up her stuff.
Her notebook then died, got a new one and attached the HD. Nothing!
Just don't mention it, the pleasue was mine and also e46M3 to help with this. What do you say buddy? :)
Good, shav, must be a relief.
finally got my laptop back after 2 wks & 3 days.
It took awhile, since the replacement DVD came from "dubai"
I got furious yesterday when the Cust Rep can't provide me as to when will the DVD replacement drive arrive in Doha.
After two hours, the lady told me the DVD arrived from Dubai, I may be able to get my laptop, the following day (which is today).
After an hour, the lady told me that I can pick it up the same day (that was yesterday)- it helps to be GROUCHY sometimes.
Good thing, when I got home, the DVD is really working.
Good thing my laptop is still under warranty.
thanks for all of your replies 2 wks ago.
What you said also is right, I meant by replacing it should be the last option that she have to make sure that it is not a hardware issue and something that can be solved. One of my friends got a problem with her MAC Laptop Hard Drive and when she went to the Al Manaa they told her that your Hard Drive is damaged. They replace it with a new one and gave her the old one, I asked her to give me the old one and let me try to retrieve that data. I used a recovery tool on windows for MAC and I got her data. I format the hard drive later and give it back to her, asked her to buy an external hard drive encloser for it and she got now an external 'Hard Drive'. So what they did in the support centers is not the right thing in most of the cases. Like a friend of mine, he forget his password and went to the shop and he told him that I need to format your computer to access it and he did. Where is his data? All lost he can't even figure out how to recover it. There is a simple way to crack it is is either by using a small software to reset the admin password to nothing or new password. Or take the motherboard battery and put it again. Simple like that :)
Have a nice weekend shavonne clements,e46M3 and let's hope that they will fix it under warranty.

Thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions.
"If it's a Doha-based vendor then push them to cover the replacement. If not then there's not much you can do."
this is it.. im gonna head to the authorised repair center now..
have a nice weekend!
Br,

I don't think that a 6 months laptop DVD would have such a problem. Please before you replace it just try to check these issues, there might be even more than that which I did not cover. I give you the major problems.
Best Regards
If you can play DVDs you've burned then it's not a region problem. It's a case of troubleshooting if you don't want to replace it.
Of course any video DVD you burn should be finalized but it looks like your software does that automatically since it's playing in a standalone DVD player.
An external writer (Imation) will cost you about 300 riyals. I disagree with KE, replacing it shouldn't be your last option. If you've tried to update the firmware, your laptop vendor will not replace it and the problem won't go away then the replacement option is both feasible and not that expensive. I agree that it shouldn't fail after 6 months but I've looked up this writer and there are many threads about problems with it.
If it's a Doha-based vendor then push them to cover the replacement. If not then there's not much you can do.
obviosly it's the easiest way.
but it would help to know the root cause.
cheerio,
Shav
Had this laptop barely 6 months.
Will unchheck multisession at Nero.
thanks for all the pointers you gave me. It's very informative.
All the best,
Shav
DVD rom/writers are very cheap...and simple to install...invest in a new one...why have so many hassels!!

1- Which software are you using to copy the DVDs? Are you using Nero? If this is the case just make sure when you burn a DVD to uncheck the option in the last asking for creating a multisession DVD which will not close your DVD and leave a chance for you to add and burn more files to the same DVD. Some of the players can't play the DVD if it has this issue.
2- While your DVD is a DVD Writer, most of the writers can read the DVD even if it was a multisession DVD. How long have you been using this DVD writer? It got normally 2 years to work fine before problems start to appear and it depends on your usage for the copying function. I'm afraid that you have to replace it.
3- Are you playing original DVDs on your laptop? Sometimes the religions are different and if you were switching between them for more than 4 or 5 times, then your DVD might been locked and can't read DVDs anymore. Solution: Format your laptop or try to get a software called 'DVD Region Free' with this one you can play DVDs without any problem and it would never ask you to change the DVD region anymore. Just make sure to enable it before you got a new one.
4- Getting a new one is your last option, have a good look at what I've said earlier before you go and get a new one. The price depends on the kind of DVD that you have. If yours is of the kind that has no plate and you insert the DVD inside and it read it, this one is troublesome. If it is a regular one then it should not cost you a lot but these guys would be taking from you something between 250 - 400. External DVD is a good option too, but what kind of USB ports do you have on your laptop? If they are 2.0 and not 1.0 then go ahead. External writers [most of them] got the USB 2.0 support to make the burning process fast, so if you don't have that the burning process would be slow for you and in some case you would not be able to complete the burn process. a good external DVD burner [LG] would cost you you nothing. The range is between 180 - 240 Max. If someone ask for more don't listen to them ...
Good Luck and Have a Nice Day

Something I'm missing here:
2 contradicts 3 (DVDs you've burned). Do they work or not?
Which software are using to play, Media Player, WinDVD or something else?
Did you install any new software that caused it to act this way?
Anyway, try the following:
Do a firmware update, get the latest version from here http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/index.html
Install the firmware update and see how it goes.
If it doesn't solve it it's better to get a new one; they're not worth fixing and a new one won't cost that much.
By the way, is your PC a Dell and do you have Roxio or Easy Creator?
Sorry, in PCs there is no easy solution; you have to troubleshoot one step at a time.
