Moving Overseas with an Animal

Has anybody brought pets over to Qatar? I might be bringing a cat but I'm not sure how much it will cost, if she will die in the cargo hold, if she will get through customs... Also, does anyone know if there is any good veterinary care in Doha or shelters to lodge animals when traveling? I imagine this service would be pretty pricey. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks.

Kody, your comment is a little misleading! There is no quarantine section at the airport because there is no quarantine in Qatar for animals.

I think you meant to say you work in the animal handling room at the airport where the animals have their water topped up and wait in the air conditioning until their flight/owners pick them up.

This is a cat that is being imported into Qatar as accompanied baggage so you probably won't get to meet her :(

No airline will allow you to transport the cat in the cabin. I guess you're not flying KLM (as you have layover in Germany) which is unfortunate, as at Schipol in Amsterdam, KLM has a pet hotel where the animals in transit are checked by a vet, given food/water and access to a litter box. Perhaps you're flying Lufthansa and you could check to see if they have a similar facility.

Getting the import license is not difficult - if you're here. That's why I recommended a pet relocator - they handle the paperwork and meet the flight to smooth any bumps in the road. It's well worth the money.

Giving an animal a tranquilizer or sedative is not usually recommended because if there is turbulence, the animal may be tossed willy nilly with no ability to brace itself.

The cat will be fine in the hold - perhaps even better than in the cabin because there won't be so much activity.

I'm not an animal lover (aside the soon-to-be-ex) but I feel very upset when people literally use animals to fulfill a emotional gap and them dispose of them as trash, what an unworthy and sickening behaviour.

Cheers to the ones that do LOVE and take care of the pets, regardless of the hassle they cause them.

to keep in mind is taking them back. Certainly in the UK it's a major task with all the rules and regulations, quarantine etc.

Now I though you were talking about my soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend. Honestly, tonight I am not getting anything right :-(

I brought two cats over recently.

First, since it is an international flight, they have to fly in the cargo. Don't worry they will be fine down below. I bought two cat carriers a little bigger than needed so they could move a little and be comfortable. I lined the bottom with newspapers and then put blankets over it so the could cuddle up if needed. They also had a water dish that attached to the carrier and I put a little food in the carrier as well. My little kitties had t travel a 26 hour flight and made it just fine. My vet prescribed me a sedative and told me how much to give then and when.

Make sure to book them a space in cargo with the airline ahead of time and get to the airport extra early. About the bathroom, they will most likely hold it or go in the carrier and the newspaper with absorb it.

The MOST IMPORTANT part is to get your import liscense for the cat. Without it you wont get through customs. This is where you need to use the pet relocators unless you know how to get the import liscense without them. I had it all done for me and everything went smoothly. I was worried about the cats on such a long flight, but the only problems I had were from the airlines in the USA.

Really if you get the import liscense everything with be very easy. You can get it from the animal hospital on airport road and you just need the current vet papers with all their shots and rabies shots. I think it is 60 Riyals.

Good luck!!

Let me know if you have any more questions

to and from the UK.

Certainly at Heathrow, there are people to water and check the animals before they fly onwards to other destinations and I assume Germany will be the same.

Check with the airline to find out.

I wouldn't consider carrying a pet, far better in the hold in a suitable carrier with plenty of ice in a stable container (the ice melts in flight and provides drinking water) and they are well cared for at airports.

and all the old posts were deleted. I'm thinking of bringing the cat as carry on without going through a pet relocator. I know I will need an international health certificate and records of immunization, microchipping, certified carrier. My main concern is that I will be flying 8 hours to Germany first and then laid over for 7 hours before boarding a connecting flight to Doha for another 8 hours. How is my cat supposed to go to the bathroom?!? In the carrier?? :X Has anyone been throuhg this process withOUT going throuhg a pet relocator service?

They will be able to answer any questions you have and arrange all the necessary paperwork involved in relocating your cat.

Thousands of animals travel in and out of Qatar every year without any problems and as long as you are organised and have all the right paperwork, a big enough crate and a little bit of professional help you and your cat will be fine!

i bought my dog from Australia to the UK and it cost 1200 pounds, he travelled pretty comfprtably and was treated well through the duration of the flight, the major chunk of cash went to some thai bloke minding the dog on the tarmac as the plane refuelled in bangkok, they put him in a ply wood kennel thing which was roomy and had its own water bowl etc,

jet pet i think it was called but they have agents all over the world and they do it all for you,

anyway good luck

Doha pet relocators can help you out. I've brought my animals over with nil problems. The paperwork is the biggest issue IMHO and having someone here (like Dohavets or the petrelocator people) can minimize your problems and anxiety levels

Contact dohavets.com for info about shipping and care when in Doha. It's not as complicated as it may seem at first blush.
