Don't bother to defend yourself. Who cares what other people think? Don't need anyone's approval. If it works for them, so be it but they can't impose their views on you.
It's illegal, but many do it. Just don't draw attention to yourself.

It never fails to surprise me that how we have accepted and embraced things which were once considered morally wrong. (for a good reason).
