Is it racist? :(

Hi all,

Before I start, I like to point out that this is not an attack towards any Filipinos (I love you guys and I think you guys are very very polite, friendly etc.)This is just for me to understand why it is the way it is.

So, here it goes, I've been looking for a room to stay near Al Salata and places nearby and everytime I come across a rent-a-room ad I got very excited especially when it's QAR1500-2000 per month, then when I open the page, I see that it's for Pinoys/ Filipinos only... :( my question is--- why is that? Is it because you're comfortable living with your own race? That's what the landlords says? Or you guys generally dont like living with people from other countries? Also, how did you get a cheap accommodation? And how do I persuade a Filipino to let me rent one of her room? (I found a really good deal within walking distance, unfortunately, she told me it's for Filipinos only... :( I just want to cry...lol

This same questions goes for westerners and keralites too... ( I love you guys too!)

As for me (Malaysian Chinese), I like living with people from all around the world, you get to try diff food, diff culture, learn diff things, heck, all my ex-roommates are from a foreign country and we all get along just fine.. we learn to respect each others space etc. So anybody want to rent a place with me? :D

This is not race discrimination. They are choosing room mate.

You can call them. It never hurt if you ask.

how we need a LOVE FORUM so we were just kidding you. Nothing wrong with having friends of the opposite sex in my culture either.

And btw, I am not Afghani, although some of my friends are :)

ssang: that'll be nice!

ex.ex.expat: No this thread is not heading to a 'love' forum... in my culture and in my upbringing it's totally okay for a girl to have guys as friends without any ulterior motive or without getting married etc. I know it's different in Afghanistan where it's all arranged marriage and girls are not suppose to talk to guys etc. and if a girl talks to the guy that means they are married, something like that... I guess you and I are just different...:)

But by having a blanket rule, you may lose out on having a good roommate and potential friend. Having said that, I could not live with someone who cooks the type of food that I might think stinks, or has lots of friends over to sing karaoke to all hours. But they may not like me when ManU is playing or when i make my special haggis :P

REALLY? REALLY lonely? I always thought that Qatar is a melting pot country, that's why I choose to go there! I am not there yet, but I am schedule to fly this Friday! Oh God please save me, I am going to be there for at least a year! Maybe we can find a 'banana skin' group together or maybe established one!

For people who dont know what banana skin is- it mean chinese people who can't speak chinese and only english- yellow on the outside, white on the inside... :)

Ssang- I am excited to meet you!

Hi,

I can relate to you, being a Malaysian born Singaporean Chinese, it is really really lonely here in Qatar. We cannot join in any other 'close' conversations with the respective groups and we speak only English.

There will be nice people but they are far too few.

As for the housing preference, they should be accomodating to foreigners but being the 'landlord' they have the final say. I can understand the desire for their own kind to live in close quaters. But this does not mean that others should not be considered.

I think discrimination is more like the word..

No Sir we can't force people to do thing that they dont want to, but we can always point this out and hopefully people realized that it's not that bad... :)

Having a group is different, it's more like a support thing from your countrymen/women.

if you ask me... of course not!

however on the perspectives' outer shell, i think it is not really healthy closing doors to outsiders that are willing to mingle.

but hey, no one can really force anbody to do this or that.

just like here in QL, if you're not a member of a group you will NOT be allowed to mingle on a conversation with them on their own group.

with so many groups here... will you call that rasism?

a good thing the main forum is still open for us non members :P

Really? I've been looking around QL to find an answer to this.

I can understand that, but sometime you can't feel at ease even with people from your own country... I mean we're all foreigners in Qatar, why not take the opportunity to learn from others? But that's just what I think, but then again, people are different..

Been discussed several times. However, imho , it is not racism. They are advertising a room in a close environment and obviously want someone who they can feel at ease with..
