Importing used car from USA
By Adhil Mubarack •
I was looking for a used Mazda CX9 with low mileage and low price ,then I got this email from a US used car import/export company (Mackxim) that they can export cars with Gulf specifications to Qatar. Hope someone can advice me regarding how safe it is.
WT: I stand corrected :O)
Brit, have you ever been to Arizona? The USA have climate zones equal to Qatar with lots of sun and sand. Funny enough, the radiator of my Grand Cherokee had a sticker of a cactus applied! I think it would be quite difficult to exchange a radiator with one of a 'larger' size. Nowadays engine departments are quite crammed with all kinds of stuff!

Why go through the hassle and risks of importing one when you could find something in the local market and where you can be sure what you are buying? Later on, you may find it difficult to sell the imported vehicle.
You can tell which cars are Gulf spec because they have all required labels (warning labels on mirrors etc) in Arabic instead of English.
If the warning lables are in English or some other language, then it's a grey market import.
If a car was sold in the gulf, it's possible that the air conditioning is better than the European version, but it could be exactly the same. Car manufacturers try to standardise as much as possible.
That dealer in the US isn't going to change all the warning labels from English to Arabic because it will be too expensive. Everyone will know it's a grey market import.
WT: You are correct - to a point..
I would assume that cars sold in the warmer states of the US would be better suited to the gulf climate..Better filters to stop sand / dust and larger radiators.
My point was that GCC spec cars usuallay have to pass te local quality test - whatever that may be..
What could those "Gulf Specs" be? They drive on the right side in the USA, too. Here, you can see cars with red and yellow blinkers. Either one should be 'Gulf Specs'. But obviously nobody cares! I brought a used Grand Cherokee from the US with US specs. No problem at all. Even the speedometer showed miles instead of km/h.
You have to be very careful.. Many such cars could be ex salvage..
I am curious though as to how they will obtain Gulf Spec Cars in the USA...
