I got scammed in a phone scam
I recived a missed call from a number from dubai, with an indian accented guy who claimed he was from the ooredoo headquarters (see how much i trust ooredoo). He said that i had won 200,000 Qr prize and that i will be able to collect the money from my nearest Qatar National Bank branch. He gave me a code and said this was the lottery code, he said that if this code matches on the one at the back of your sim card, you are the lucky winner. I checked, and it matched, and thats what got me fooled. I called back and told the guy that it matched, he said then you're the lucky winner, i said that i didn't participate in anything etc then how did i win? he said that this is a contest from which 5 countries (namly Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Dubai, And Kuwait.)he asked for my Qatar ID so he could generate a bank code, for the money and i gave the Qtar ID number to him. He then said that the last thing left to do is to pay some online charges worth 3,500 Qr to get the claim code. This was the point i realized that this was a scam and i had made a big mistake.I asked him if i had won 200k why give me a missed call? he then cut the call. I am really worried and would like to know whats the worst that he could do using the ID number and how would that affect me. I would love to get some asurance that nothing unexpected or unfortunate would happen to me. the number was
+971 56 858 4734. please contact soon and help me im worried here.
I would also like to know if this has happened with anyone else here.
The thing is, that i got a couple of friends there in dubai, and i thought that maybe one of them changed his number or something like that probably, and this turned out to be the reason i called back
i've got a similar call to my voda number the guy said he is from vodafone and calling from dubai (i believe dubai has no voda operator there).
i straight away told him to take the 200k on my behalf and called the voda customer care to report the case. that was the least thing i cud do to trace these ***ing scammers.
I receive many such calls even from "unknown" numbers especially from African countries. I never accept them or return them.
I will never understand why people return missed calls to numbers they aren't familiar with. If it is legit, they will call back. If it isn't, no harm done.
There is nothing they can do with your ID. Forget the story. That said wait for your phone bill as their number is usually over-taxed and you will end up paying 10 USD or more per minute of communication with them.
and what can he do at most with the id number?
i feel so dumb i cant explain, but hats off to taht guy for making it seem so legit
are you absolutlely super freakin' sure?
This is the daily dirty business of so many scammers who tend to look for victims like you. They always tend to exploit our greed for free money, and look for more personal information for taking the scam to the next cooking level.
However since you have not remitted any money, you are safe, and nothing to worry about your ID and personal information, just be watchful in future.
Report to the Police and ket them have the number he called from
