Freedom of the Press
I've been working on a thesis about Qatar's freedom of the press. Would you mind answering these questions? I'd like to hear from the prospective of the people in Qatar. Thank you!
Questions:
1. What are the reasons behind the gov't imposing control on the print and broadcast media?
2. Is there a specific standard in which the Qatar government follows in regard to censorship?
3. Even if there are limitations on press freedom, can we still say it is an effective tool of disbursing information to the public? For you, how effective is the media in qatar?
4. Granted the success of Al-jazeera in international current affairs, is that tantamount to the success of the local media as well? Or could we say that the local news is as successful as Al-jazeera?
5. Are the local journalist satisfied even if there's restriction to press freedom? If not, those who have dissented will of course be subjected to law. Can you describe to us the judicial process for journalist? And how they are treated by the government?
6. Knowing that there are also privately owned media corp. in Qatar, does the government impose tighter restrictions on them? Does the news vary coming from different sources? Or they are all consistent with each other?
7. Do you think that these restrictions discourage privately owned media corporations?
8. Looking ahead, do you think there would be a change on the restrictions to print and broadcast media? If yes, what change will this be? Is it more restrictions or less?
9. Are the people satisfied with what they get from their local news sources?
10. Do you think that removing these restrictions on print and broadcast media would be detrimental to Qatar itself?

When compared to other countries in the region, Qatar has an area of greater freedom of expression online. Unlike neighboring countries where many bloggers & Internet forums admins are called in for questioning or being jailed
Literary speaking, Qatar lifted censorship in media since 1995, and the ministry of information was abolished ever since. What is followed now can be considered as self-censoring. Each entity follows it's own roles of self censoring which can be directed by National security dept. Or influenced by reports from the ministry of Islamic affairs.
"Freedom of the Press" ? .. here its only 'either you press, or let me press' lolx
In this part of the world they cannot AFFORD freedom of press and freedom of speech.
In this area of the world they cannot AFFORD freedom of speech and freedom of press.

1. Religious & social aspects that are obliged to be reflected in the country's law
2. Qatar lifted censorship in media since 1995, and the ministry of information was abolished ever since. What is followed now can be considered as self-censoring. Each entity follows it's own roles of self censoring which can be directed by National security dept. Or influenced by reports from the ministry of Islamic affairs. With the initiative of HH sheikha Moza bint NAsser, there was a great chance of an exclusive level of media freedom in the Arab world with the establishment Of Doha centre of media freedom & NU-Q in Qatar. Yet , there have been some blurriness in the vision in past two years and no remarkable achievement in the local scene. It's worth mentioning that Qatar constitution of 2004 guarantees the right to freedom of expression, provided it is not inconsistent with the religious constants.
3. When compared to other countries in the region, Qatar has a greater area of freedom of expression online. As for printed media, the Arabic dailies has an area of greater freedom when compared to the English ones.
