i have a 3-page GUIDELINES for people with Diabetes mellitus (aka Type 2 Diabetes). This was given to me by my ex-partner then when he was diagnosed with Diabetes too.

Send me (thru PM) your e-mail address and I'll have the scanned copy sent to you first thing tomorrow.

I'll also post the topic too, for the other posters who might be interested with the info...

But as a Filipino, I would overeat rice...lol

So, I stopped eating rice and go for fruits and veggies (salads), no fried foods, mostly steamed or boiled. I go for fresh fruit juices, not the bottled ones...

The recommended amount would be 2 and a half cup of rice for the day (we're talking about the typical Filipino 3X meals a day).

I still eat meat (chicken-without skin, beef AND FISH)but as I said, i watch what I eat.

for check-up..i have a handy glucometer in my room. i check my glucose level in the morning and i must admit, I'm happy coz it's lower than before. I'm still diabetic but now on a more controlled level.

You should see an Internist/specialist as they would prescibe the correct medication to control your blood sugar. I do FASTING BLOOD SUGAR before (once a month) and will do it again, once i renewed my HEALTH CARD.

BOTTOMLINE...it's hard to be diabetic...but you know what, my father was diabetic for almost 15 years...and after strict healthy diet/living, he was diabetic-free since January this year...

Ok, you avoided rice and what you eat instead?

Is rice that bad for us? up to now I am eating rice and I feel the quantity matters a lot and not the rice it self do you agree? but great !! if you totally avoided rice becos I know that filipinos love rice and most of them eat 3 times a day right ?

What kind of check ups we should have and how often and how do you check your glucose level.

Since I found out that I was diabetic, I stopped eating rice. And you know Filipinos eat rice as part of their meal.

I can't eat french fries, or pasta which is so sad coz I love anything pasta. I even avoid chocolates and softdrinks. Even my alcohol intake was down to 2 bottles of beer coz if i go over that, the next day, my vision would be blurry and I'd be so weak...

I eat veggies, fruits and fruit juices and for sweetener, I use HERMESETAS sweetener.

I do slide out of my diet once in a while, eat steak/pork and bear its consequences. At 38 going 39, I'm not that young so I have to be careful...

percentage of diabetics globally, not sure? But i know in Qatar, diabetes is widespread...not surprising, though...

Irrysa and Azilana,

a real problem after breaking the fast, you Azi are you really controlling your self the way you described or this is just an advise that others should follow,(thanks for the smile)

well...I used to take tablets for maintenance but that makes be bloat and edematous...

So, I resorted to exercise, proper diet and avoiding food that could shoot my sugar up the ceiling

Anyway, Irrysa is right...you can go on fasting but do make sure that when you break your fast, AVOID ...as in DO NOT EAT the following

RICE, POTATO and anything SWEET...SOFTDRINKS, COFFEE, and if you take TEA/ CHAI...no sugar...

I think I'm gonna post something later what diabetic should eat and NOT TO EAT...

Mihlar,

If you feel that you need your medication or by fasting your body/health is at risk, you dont have to fast. BUT you will have to feed a poor person for each day of fasting month. The same ruling for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

As for travelers and women experiencing MP, they have to make-up for those days missed once ramadhan is over.

Those not required to fast are 1. A mentally ill person 2. Old person 3. Children under the age of 15.

Milhar, I am sure u can test it on urself and how ur body reacts to the fasting.

there r ppl who can do it, monitoring their sugar level carefully through the day, and there r those whose bodies simply cannot take it.

So just try to fast, but pls be very careful.

If u see that ur body is up for it, then go ahead.

Plz remember also, when u r breaking the fast, do not eat too much at first, so that ur sugar won't go too high rapidly!!

And if u will see that ur body cannot do this, then plz don't fast.

U can have ur own way of fasting in this case. Make it in the way that is up to u...like smoking and other things.

God doesn't want u to harm and hurt urself- this is even more haram than not fasting if ur health is in a good condition.

Ramadan Kareem :o)

If you're looking for a problem, you're probably gonna find one.

First of all supernurse, before you insult me READ MY POST!!!!!! I agreed he didn't have to fast. My objection was to your comment. So why don't you follow your own advise about being sensible.

QT, I am using the word hate in its slang (Black American) context. In regards to hating back, I think you're taking this a little too seriously. Why would I hate supernurse (even though she called me an idiot, I'm not mad at ya) based off of one comment on Qatar Living? My point is people should be more respectful. If this makes you question my credentials as an "educator" than I

think I can live with that.

I was about to make the same point.

eagles - it's a point of view and a questioning one at that, but then again, if anything that does not come within your parameters of understanding you view as 'hate' then you will be shocked when you encounter the real thing.

"Deaths in the Bible. God - 2,270,365

To imply hate by someone, usually gives warrant to hate back! As an "educator", you must know the power of words and influence!

Implying something that may not be true, regardless of what you think of the actual comment promotes such hate!

" you won't need that insulin in the land of the 70 virgins!...... The sad part is that he/she won't have that audience - mind you at least there will be a sense of nothingness - oh wait- not even a sense."

In fact if you check my post, I hold the same opinion as you that Mihlar doesn't have to fast if his health would be in danger. SO this is not about a difference of opinion. It is about the comments above. Tell me how they are revelant to this question? People can express their opinions but we should be respectful when doing so. The first comment is extremely disrespectful and not called for.

"Lastly to the two haters who felt the need to be sarcastic towards a sincere question, to you be your deeds and to us be ours. Then Allah will judge between us about that which we used to differ about. Feel free to take my comment anyway you want to."

As one of at least 3 "educators" that have posted on this thread, I'd like to point out that those that may disagree with aspects of what others say, does not constitute them as "haters".

Type 1 Diabetes is when the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The pancreas then produces little or no insulin. A person who has type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to live.

Type 2 Diabetes on the other hand, the pancreas is usually producing enough insulin, but for unknown reasons the body cannot use the insulin effectively, a condition called insulin resistance. It is most often associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, previous history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, and certain ethnicities. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Sorry if I offer unwanted info...I'm DIABETIC TOO...

Unfortunately, my diabetes falls under hereditary reasons wherein all first borns have it (weird, isn't it?)...

The ill person is excused from fasting if fasting will harm him. This has been agreed upon by the people of the sunnah. Instead of fasting they should feed poor people to make up for the fasting. For further info on this subject, I would suggest you go to Fannar or the Qatar Guest Center.

There is nothing much to do if you are diabetic. Are you using insulin or are you using tablets? I know diabetic patients who are taking only tablets and they are fasting every year without any trouble. You should be careful not to have low blood sugar due to fasting. Take easily digestable carbohydrate food at iftar time and take the other type for suhur. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly and keep always some candies with you. You should control intake of high calorie food for iftar and for suhur as it will increase your blood sugar.
