Fair value for a good second-hand car
By MappoTrell •
Hi,
appreciate if knowledgeable people will shed some advice. I will be looking for a 3-4 year old second hand car, ideally with a single-owner history, around 60,000 km mileage, if less than better. Brand- and size-wise, we're talking Camry, Accord, Altima, Mazda 6 class car. I've been reading on a regular basis the car classifieds here, and the pricing seems to be all over the place. Also, presumably, car prices should cheap in Qatar. I'm coming from Australia, and while occasionally I see what looks like a good bargain, in general I wouldn't say that the prices I see at this site are that great.
Cheers.
Dude dont be more confused!get a Camry or avalon both 2003 are available in less than 38,000 in their best condition, for Best Economy and Power at the same time.
For a 3 to 4 yrs used car all that you have to consider is its technical Support/Maint...cost,which is very very expensive for all other cars even for ordinary brands.
It is my personal Experience coz we have Merce s320,Sel 300e230,e220, Hayundai sonata, Nissan sunny,Suzki Swift, camry and an avalon in my family Avalone is Great.
that's real nice of you. Btw, if you prefer you can PM me. Sports cars are nice, but as the first car in Qatar I'm looking for a family sedan type of car. Thanks and cheers.
MappoTrell Let me have a look around and let me come back to you, I am going shopping for my 5th car on sunday.
Maintenance Cost is much less than what you are used to, what others say is BS..
I had a BMW 7 series when I was living in Aus, so I know what I am talking about. Here I got a Merc, 12Cylinder Sports Car and it is not expensive compared to Aus and Europe.
BMW you can get cheap, but I will come back to you with examples next week.
thanks for this one. Btw, it sounds like you're referring to used car dealerships, correct?
What would be a good price for BMW 3-series (larger versions) of 5-series, say no more than 5yr old, under 90k mileage? Maybe, same stats on Audi A6?
And with European models, don't you get stiffed on maintenance costs?
Cheers.
Mappo Trell, it's easy to buy second hand cars here, don't look at ad's online or in the newspaper - you have to search around - in Salwa Road or else where and you will find what you are searching for.
BritExpat, I might be able to help you and recommend someone, if you PM me with what you need and want- got some locals that might help.
IcElee, I have now my 61st second Hand Car, my 62nd will come next week. And I have bought 7 cars here already all second hand.-I agree it is easier to buy new car, but it is way more expensive. AND I change cars because I like a change, not because I get cars that need a lot of maintenance
it's really up to you... i guess you have the money to buy it anyway... if it fits your style then go ahead... just make sure you won't regret your decisions... but it's still best to widen your choices... you're not here yet... you can't decide what's good for you if you haven't been around the place much... one way or another.. you'll find a suitable car... right?
just a thought! :)
hello... i'm not being ignorant... just practical... you might as well pay for a new car that can last a bit longer than a second hand that you don't know anything about it's history... you can't really rely on everything the dealer tells you... ofcourse they're gonna say it's in good condition... THEY'RE SELLING IT!!!! if you want to sell your car... will you tell them that it's got problem?
and correct me if I'm wrong... you said ALL your cars have been second hand and none Japanese? how many have you had anyway? then maybe you're getting bad cars that's why you're getting another one...so better spend one time than spend a lot of money fixing everytime you get car problems.

I am looking for a Porsche or BMW..
Can you recommend any good secondhand dealers please..
it helps if you'll be more specific with info, and maybe less emotional too :). Any brands you consider good value for Qatari conditions? I had a look at some BMW ads. But buying second hand is tricky. I'll be a brand new person to the country when arrive, so know nothing what pitfalls can be there. Here in Aus, both of my cars I bought second-hand, but I'm local here. I knew when I came across honest people, and I've been happy with my car buys.
thanks for your comments. IcElee, I traced another thread on car buying through your profile public history. A guy there mentioned about brand new Nissan Ultima for 55k. That looks like an interesting option.
IcElee and Kittyhawk your answers are based on ignorance and nothing else, or maybe you are looking at the chepaest new car possible to find. There are 1000's of cars around and second hand is better than new.
Firstly, why do you want a \Jpanese Car ? They are boring !
And if you buy them second hand they are overpriced.
All my cars here have been second hand and None Japanese.
People would tell you that parts of none japanese cars are expensive and that resale value is second to none, but all this is a myth told by simple people without a proper knowledge of the market.
if you plan to stay here for at least 4 years or longer, i suggest to get a new car. icelee is right, at least you're sure of its condition. it's hard to find a reasonably priced secong hand car.
I agree with you Mappo... been searching for a car also for about 2 weeks now and still haven't found anything that is reasonable enough for a secondhand car. might as well buy a new car... atleast you're the first to use it and you'll know it's in a good condition.
