Driver's Permit / Canada
My wife and I have been living in Qatar for 15 months. We are thinking about getting a car. She drives, I don't. She has a Canadian drivers license.
My question:
Does she have to take a driving test and/or driving lessons before she is permitted to switch her Canadian license for a Qatari one?
We have the letter from my employer stating it is OK for her to drive.
Does she simply have to visit the traffic department with the letter, photographs, her license and ID or is there more to it than that?
Any info on this would be most appreciated!
Cheers,

it was a swap,,,I showed them my Canadian license and they gave me a Qatari one.
As for the American situation, I heard that a top Qatari couldn't get an American license without taking the test, so they are returning the favour now,,,,but if you are Canadian I believe that you are still free and clear of it.
she really needs to take the test before she can get a license ... there are 2 options:
1. is to take the direct test, just bring all the requirements at the traffic dept. & they will schedule her for the test.
2. she can take the short course for driving lesson and then take the test.
I was able to just show my Canadian driver's license and get the Qatari license (with the permit letter from her/your employer and usually a letter from hubby) Took 20 minutes.
However, I understand that if you have a US license you can no longer follow the above (which was the same as for Canadians in the past) - I don't think it has changed, most of my colleagues who have arrived in the last 6 months haven't mentioned having to take a test or lessons.
Best you can do is go to the Traffic dept with your paperwork and see what they say
