Does weekend camping require a permit?

Hi QLers, My friends and I (along with our wives) are planning a weekend camp in the desert, but would like to know if this requires a permit. I tried searching for this on Ministry Of Environment's website, but all I found was a press release on permanent camps (which are bound by a whole set of regulations and do require a permit). Further, one of my friends is concerned about drunk drivers crashing into our camps at night, does this actually happen? Appreciate your advice Alieh
