DJI Drone Permit to import

Hi, we just arrived in doha from hongkong this morning, we bought a DJI phantom proffesional quadcopter, we are escorted to the custome office in Hamad International Airport. They Give us a slip and told us to present these in al mamoura office. They said that the camera built in the drone is not allowed in the country, they said to get the permit there in al mamoura. My question is where in al mamoura? they said something about Information systems department but i'm not sure where that is?.

Thank you very much.

EDIT: You can visit the Civil Aviation Authority's website to register your equipment.

Any updates to bring in a drone with or without a camera? Thought of getting one so that I can take along for short trips around the region. Unlikely for local flying.

This has been sorted out.

@deadsimple

yap i know them.. but as far as the regulations go.. naah, it will not be released in few weeks, they have been telling that years ago... and i would never expect it to come very soon. not this year maybe.

actually you can fly drones or even toys drones without camera.. just go the RC airfield. You said they don't allow import of quadcopters with camera?.. yes they don't allow it, but you can still fly with it in the RC airfield, we called it FPV.. some use fireshark or skyzone googles. You can go there every friday to witness it yourself.

I recently bought a quadcopter/drone Whirlwind XK X251 from Amazon UK, it was stopped by customs in qatar and Aramex emailed me to get a letter from Qatar Radio Control Sports Center. The guys in RC sports center were very helpful and suggested me to go to Aviation Safety office in Corniche as they were waiting for a new Drone Law before issuing any letters. They also told me that I also have to get a letter from MOI if it had a camera which it didn't. I went to Aviation Safety office and met the Director who is a very nice guy who told me they are drafting a new law regarding drones import and usage which will be out in a few weeks. I explained that the drone is really small (toy grade) with no camera and will be flown inside the compound activity center by my 6 year old son. I showed him the photos and he kindly agreed to issues a release letter which I picked up after a few days. I hope people find this useful and please look out for the new law if you are planning to import one.

Travel Experiences

March 2014: Flew into Doha with DJI Phantom (which I had taken apart and packed in separate bags). No problem going through customs/security. But have since learned the the Qatar Science Club requires a one year permit, simple application that states the type of UAV you want to bring into the country. Other colleagues have had to leave their UAVs at the airport, go to the Qatar Science Club, get the permit, and then return to airport with permit in order to collect their UAV. There's an RC airfield specifically for UAVs in Al Khor, just north of Doha.
