Crappy Skype

I just had a teleconference back to Canada (Internet to North American telephone bridge) that I signed into using Skype. It was the worst call I've ever had with Skype. After 3 attempts to call in, I could finally hear the conference but they could hear very little (less than 20%) of whatever I had to say. There was also lots of static (sounded like thunder) and noises like people talking under water.

Has anyone else noticed a deterioration in Skype quality from Doha?

Can anyone recommend a better option (without dialing direct and giving Qtel 2QR a minute)? Is Vonage any better?

It might be that your connection isn't fast enough.
