hello, first post on this forum and really hoping someone can help here. well my girlfriend is deployed to qatar and i was wondering how difficult it would be for her to get a cell phone there? she has a cingular phone there but its tri band so thats out the question. any other suggestions? shes only there for about 4 and a half months. ive heard people do get them but i just want to know how she can. been looking online and people say to buy a prepaid phone from cingular and send it her, but what about a sim card to work there? buying a phone off ebay? sorry if some of these questions sound dumb but we just want ways to call each other more often. thanks

EDIT- what kind of prices are we looking at? would it be easier for her to purchase a cheap phone there, or me buy one from ebay or something and send it? any specific types of phones that are cheap that would work? thanks everyone

Skype is a good way to call from computer to computer or from computer to phone line.

It workd great and saves a lot

I used to work for cingular in the states. Her best bet is to call cingular tell them she is going overseas and needs her phone unlocked, they'll send a code through text and it'll unlock so u can use with any provider. now she can use a cingular sim card but the rates are going to b expensive so just let her buy a prepaid sim card from qtel and pop it in the cingular phone. for around 150QR which includes 100QR credit

an Unlocked 3 band phone works here- but the Cingular one she got is probably locked to a Cingular card I guess. She can get all phones here from the Cheapest to Iphone so that is not a problem and as others suggest - get a Prepaid card and use it.

And an unlocked Phone is always handy for later as well

phone and she can bring it with her is another option. That way you can call her at a local number and it's cheap cheap cheap. Skype is basically the same thing as well, just uses a computer.

here and in the States. I have 2 different SIM cards (got them free) and switch them out. I have a monthly contract with Q-tel here in Qatar and use the prepaid cards from Walmart when I am in the states.

peter in case you dont know middle east always the first market to sale all the latest phone. so no worries, we got different kind of brand names available here. she can use skype or yahoo messenger to call you or hala card from QTel.

Everybody is right everybody is wrong it depends where you stand.

Almost any phone can be used here in qatar, as long as it is not "blocked" but then again there are som many places here that can "un-lock" your phone.

Ask your frined to go to any Q-tel shop [qatars only telephone company] and buy a prepaid sim.

you wil pay 50Qr, and that includes 50Qr call credit.

Only need to bring passport if she does not get qatari id.

She just can go to any Qtel branch and get a hala prepaid sim card she will just have to provide her passport copy.
