Anybody composting?

Hi,
Just moved about 2 months ago and really want to plant some herbs n veggies n plants in my garden. I'm thinking of composting to add some nutrients to the soil.
I've never done it b4 so need to know if any1 else here composts and if so did you purchase a bin, or have u just made ur own compost pile in ur yard.
As i dont want to attract pests, i would definetly want to use a bin, and as its my first real gardening venture, id rather purchase one already made for that purpose.
Any advice, help, knowledge on the subject n experience would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanx. I have basil in a pot, doing very well on my window sill. I just visited teh Arab agricultural center and got a few houseplants and some jasmine and a fruit tree we planted in our garden. I also bought some parsley seeds i plan to sow tomorrow insha'Allah.

Where are the garden centers off Salwa road. Where on Salwa? I just started driving. I would be coming from Qatar FOundation/education city. If u could give me some more detailed directions i would really appreciate it. If i cant do the composting myself...which i still would love to try as we have lots of food waste around here...it would be wonderful to be able to get some from somewhere. i think compost mixed with the sandy soil could be a great mix ?! as i said, never done it b4 so im not sure.

Thanx for the help

Peace

Not composting, but have planted quite a few herbs, lemon grass and ginger and all are doing well.

I planted everything in pots as I don't have a garden.

Bought my potting soil at Carrefour.

I think you might have trouble composting here, as to create a good one it should be temerate controlled - the centre should reach no more than 60c otherwise it kills all the good bacteria. Since the airtemperature this summer has reached 50c on some days, I think you would struggle to control that.

If you visit the garden centres (there's one just off d-ring and lots just off Salwa Road - near the wholesale markets)they will either have compost, or fertiliser which you can mix with the dirt currently in your garden.

I've tried with herbs here and struggled, however I have 1 basil plant which I just stuck in the sand and it's survived the year!!

Good luck - would be great to know how you get on!
