Qatar online communities join forces for ‘cool’ campaign
Online communities and websites Qatarliving.com, iloveqatar.net and Qatarvsitor.com have joined forces with the Qatar Living Volunteer Group (QLVG) to launch their “Cool Campaign” next weekend, which will see volunteers distribute drinks, t-shirts and caps to labourers suffering in the summer heat.
Group members are hoping to get many more volunteers involved in this year’s campaign, and have asked anyone interested to join them tomorrow to kick off the programme.
Sponsors including Sigma paints have provided a number of items to the group, such as 300 t-shirts and caps to protect workers from the sun.
And members have also managed to collect over 2,500 bottles of water, as well as fruit juices and other items.
Manager of QLVG, who goes by the moniker “Speed”, explained that the group is looking for more sponsors to contribute to the effort, and are especially interested in soft drink companies and water suppliers getting involved.
“Last year this campaign was initiated by our volunteer member, ‘Pitstop’ to help labourers who are working in these incredibly hot conditions,” he explained.
He noted that with temperatures reaching the 50-degree Celsius mark, many workers have already been found to be suffering from heatstroke.
“On behalf of the QLVG, I am announcing the ‘Cool Campaign for Workers,’” said Speed, adding: “I am calling for all kindhearted QL’ers to come forward and donate generously.”
Last year QLVG launched a similar campaign and distributed drinks and cooling items across Doha.
Public response was so good that the members were keen to expand their efforts this year.
“I think by the time it comes to distribution on Saturday we will have at least double the amount of stuff to hand out to labourers who need our help,” added Speed.
The group will be collecting items at the QIB parking area next to KFC on airport road on Thursday and Friday (July 1 and 2) from 6pm to 7pm, and will be distributing them on Saturday.
Anyone interested in helping can contact Speed through QLVG, or by e-mail on [email protected].
