DOHA: The Philippine Embassy yesterday asked Filipinos here not to lend ears to rumours suggesting that eight community members died in factional feuding in the Industrial Area recently.
“These are baseless rumours,” said the ambassador of The Philippines, Crescente Relacion.
Relacion said in remarks to this newspaper that the embassy has been getting persistent calls from community members asking if ‘reports’ about the incident were true.
He said there was a trivial tussle between two Filipino groups but those involved were already investigated by the police and some of them were only hurt contrary to rumors suggesting that there were eight people who died in the incident.
“We have already checked with the authorities here and they have investigated the incident and interrogated the people involved in the melee,” Relacion said. “I urge fellow countrymen in Qatar not to believe this pure gossip.” No one has died and the rumors are entirely baseless, the envoy reiterated.
Meanwhile, a community leader of Guardians Philippines International, Inc. (GPII) has reacted to the rumors and said they were dragged in by rumour-mongers as one of the two factions involved in the fracas.
“We want to make it clear that we are not, in any way, involved any such incident,” said Jun Mariano, president of GPII
