No Visa: Filipino gets sacked for complaining

DOHA: A Filipino with no visa stamped on his passport since his arrival here three years ago, was sacked by his employer after he made an informal complaint to an official from the Labour Department.

Bryant Borromeo, 33, said he arrived here on May 30, 2007 and his original sponsor gave him a release to work elsewhere, so he managed to get a job with a company as a sales assistant.

However, no visa was stamped on his passport all this while. Borromeo says he lodged a complaint with his country’s embassy and it even wrote a letter to the company but in vain.

“With no identity (ID) card I have been lucky not to have been detained for not having a valid work visa,” he told this newspaper.

Borromeo is married and has a child back home. His monthly pay packet was QR1,850 but he said the company deducted QR200 for providing him accommodation.

While he was working, a Qatari labour official became friendly with him since he visited his stores frequently to make purchases. “I told him about my plight recently, but when the company came to know of it they sacked me.” According to Borromeo, he is staying with a cousin after his employer gave him marching orders. “I have lost appetite and sleep due to tension… I want to go back home as soon as possible,” he said.

“I have no savings and am looking forward to receiving terminal benefits from the company and that would be the only money I would be carrying home.”

Asked for comment, a legal expert, Abdelaal A Khalil said the onus of not stamping work visa on a foreign worker’s passport is on his employer and the company is to be fined QR10,000.

A sponsor, according to Qatar’s laws, must refer a foreign worker to competent authorities for visa processing within seven days of his arrival, said Abdelaal. Contacted for comment, the company which employed Borromeo said he was a temporary worker and left on his own. A company official said his visa could not be stamped since he failed to provide relevant documents.

“We don’t have any documents provided by him,” said the official.
