Man robs shop 'to help sick mother'

Dubai: A Filipino, who sells children's games, has apologised for stealing Dh15,000 and claimed in court Thursday that he needed the cash to help his bed-ridden mother.

"I know what I did was wrong& I am sorry for that but I plead for mercy because I needed the money to help my mother who's sick in bed," argued the 36-year-old vendor when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The Public Prosecution charged the defendant, A.J., with stealing nearly Dh15,000 from a gift shop in a Deira mall.

"I am guilty and I am very sorry for what I did," A.J. told Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad.

A 33-year-old British manager testified that the workers of the gift shop discovered that one of the front door locks was missing.

"The workers also found that the register was open and the surveillance camera had been switched off& the thief stole around Dh15,000.

"Meanwhile, the mall's surveillance cameras showed the Filipino heading towards the shop at around 5.30 am& he stayed inside for ten minutes before he walked out," claimed the Briton.

Records said the shop manager informed the police that he summoned the suspect for questioning.

During questioning by the police and Public Prosecution, the suspect confessed that he robbed the place.

The verdict will be heard later this month.
