Criteria eased for nursing practice
DOHA: The number of nurses seeking a licence to practice in Qatar would see a major rise with the Supreme Council of Health liberalising the licencing rules.
Nurses applying for a licence now require only two years experience, instead of three.
The move is intended to address the shortage of nurses in the country and rationalising the licensing procedures. It follows the launch of the online competency tests for medical practitioners by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) earlier this month.
Every medical practitioner seeking a SCH licence is required to take the tests.
The online tests are an effective tool to assess the competency of nurses and other medical practitioners. Any nurse with two years work experience and a pass in the competency test can now apply for a licence. We are expecting a surge in the number of applicants with the new rule, which also poses a challenge to our department, said Dr Jamal Al Khanji, acting director of the Medical Licensing Department.
The tests introduced jointly with an international organisaton have proved to a big success, he said.
