I wouldn't try anything but Canon or Nikon (I'm a Canon guy)

Having used both Nikon and Canon, I would suggest you go for Nikon for its user friendly and easy to understand menus. For your price range, I'd suggest that you go for the D80 kit. It comes with the 18-135mm lense which covers a good range. It costs Qr4650 as of today and is expected to fall in June. Happy clicking!!

Go for a Canon EOS 450D that comes with a Kit lens of 18-55mm. The camera is also known as Canon EOS Rebel XSi. Qatar dealer's price is very high. Check at www.ebay.com for a better bargain. Average price at ebay is around US$800. Another cheaper Canon EOS rebel XS(also know as Canon EOS 1000D) is available for US$500.

Lens line up of Canon is far superior than that of Nikon.

try one out - I am a Nikon user and chose it because it felt good in my hand and at my eye. Canon is excellent too, but ergonomically it didn't 'fit'. Sony, Canon, Nickon are all excellent - but you couldn't go past a a D90 for your money.

I am a Nikon fan so I will naturally recommend Nikon. My advice is to go for either Nikon or Canon. Nothing wrong with the Sonys but I would stay away or one reason only. The choice of lenses for both Canon and Nikon is far greater than that for Sony. Third party manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron, make all their lenses to fit either Nikon or Canon. So you will have a greater choice. Also, if you want to stick with genuine Nikon or Canon lenses, you have a wider choice. You can't go wrong with either.

For your budget, I would recommend something like the Nikon D60. If you can stretch the budget a bit, The D90 is the latest consumer DSLR and has all the latest bells and whistles, including ability to shoot HD video (not full HD though). That retails for around 6000 at Salam Plaza.

Cameras like the D60 or D90 normally are sold in kit form, meaning you get a lens with the body. Typically this is a medium zoom lens (35-70 mm or something like that). I believe the D90 is coming with 18-105mm lens. Either way, you might need to get a second lens covering the range 70-300mm. Or you can choose one "do-it-all" lens that goes from wide angle to the 300mm end.

Go to Salam Plaza and have a look at both brands. The camera you choose should be comfortable to hold and buttons easily reached. Again you can't go wring with either two brands. Salam plaza also have a good range of lenses and accessories including lenses and filters. Don't forget to install a clear Skylight filter on all your lenses as protection from scratches. Ask them for this.

Finally, when you make your choice,go and check the prices somewhere else, like Carrefour. I think you will find they are cheaper. But do go to Salam first. There you can try out the cameras with whatever lens you want. The staff can also answer any questions you might. They seem to have better knowledge than other places.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

the sony alpha models are quite good for beginners( as what reviewers say). I bought A200 since it includes 2 lenses with 300mm lens in the package, it cost me around Qr2800.I'm satisfied and happy with it. never regretted. though they say nikon is the best mid-quality dslr.it's up to you...

All DSLR manufacturers are good, you can't go wrong with any of them. I myself use Nikon (D2X), since I started buying their film cameras I have been loyal to them. (if you start buying lenses for one particular Lens mount you usually continuing with that Particular brand)
