Silly but earnest question... (and it's not about salary)
I have accepted a position and expect to be moving to Doha some time in May and I have learned SO much from visiting this site. I have to admit that I read it every chance that I get and just about every question I have thought of has been answered at some point within ths forum except for one....
I have incredibly thick and curly hair and without a good curling/flat iron and blow dryer I will likely scare many away on my first day at work (lol lol lol). So, can anyway tell me where I can buy these items once I arrive in Doha? I will have a couple of days to get situated before I begin work and these items are first on my list of "must haves" to be purchased.
I know this will seem like a trivial issue to some but I am hoping one of the QL ladies will take pity on me and help me out!
Thank you in advance for your help and thank you for such a wonderful web site about living in Doha, Qatar!
lol bibo, check the date when the thread was posted... dont you think she may have found the amswer by now?!!! heehee!!

you should be able to find one at Radioshack
Tweetybird,
Dont bother to bring any electrical appliances to Doha. We have everything here. Not only is the voltage different but also the cycles and plugs.
For you hair, they have lots and lots of items at Carrefour & Hyatt plaza, Giant stores. There is also a specialized hair supply store on Salwa road called Nazih which sells everything professional incl dryers, irons flatters, products and whatever you might need. Dont worry Qatar has just about everything available here.

You will find converters at Al Asmakh street and Mushaireb street next to Souq Waqef

you should have brought the converter from Canada as well... that's what I have done... here... i am not sure if you can get it anywhere...
Can anyone direct me to the right store to buy voltage converter in Doha? I'm new in Doha and brought one 110V appliance from Canada. Thanks QL
Don't worry...I'll show you around Doha during off work days. Hope you don't mind me cigarette smell in my car...lol.
Looking forward to see you here in Doha...
We have hair dryers and flat irons here in Doha and you don't even have to go down to the souqs to get them. I bought both at Giant grocery store at Hyatt Plaza. I'm sure Carrefour has them as well. Good luck with the move.
Thanks Azilana!! I just may take you up on your offer and give you a "holler" when I get there. I will be there by myself the first couple of months until my husband and kids make the move over the summer!
Hi, Tweetybird,
Welcome to QL and welcome to DOHA. Lucky you, you have QL to give you an insight of what to expect to see/experience in Qatar before you come here. Two years ago, I was clueless of what I would find here and I had a culture shock on the first day I landed in Doha. I wish I knew QL then...hehehe
To your question. Lisa and Mira are correct. You could buy those items there and bring them with you. There are converters available here but I suggest you buy them as well. There are not much choices here and most of the items and appliances available on sale are made from China and/or Taiwan.
But if you're not keen of lugging those with you, there are shops available here in Doha where you could buy them but it might cost you extra. Unless you have a car to move about, you'll find taxis are kind of expensive.
So, if I were you, the few free days you'll have before you start work, spend them knowing the area. Honey, if you need help, just holler...
;-)
Sorry about that, I thought the voltage was 110. I just spoke to my husband and he told me it was 220. There are voltage regulator kits that you can buy. I have purchased them at Target in the past. You can find them in the luggage department. That may help you until you can find something in Doha. My husband said that he has seen blow dryers in the stores. I'm glad you posted this - now I know I will have to research this before I go. I am going to see if I can find a dual voltage iron. I have seen dual voltage curling irons before, that maybe an idea. Good luck and I hope you enjoy Doha.
Thanks Lisa and Mira. I actually have these types of electrical appliances here in the States but because the voltage and frequency are different in Qatar versus the U.S., I am not planning on bringing electrical items with me. That is why I am hoping to be able to make a quick purchase when I arrive.
I am not in Qatar yet, but you should be able to purchase one before you leave the states. Don't know where you are in U.S., but you can get a good flat iron at Sally's Beauty Supplies (if you have one near you). The ION is the best one that they sell. I personally prefer the Chi flat iron which can be purchased at most beauty salons or Trade Secrets in the malls. Hope this helps. Also, make sure you get some type of hair silk for your hair too, which is a must if you are using a flat iron.
If you have a stop-over in the UK buy one there.
