Sorry for bumping an old topic, but i also wanted to get a rough value of TV prices before i arrive. In the UK i currently have a 32' 1080p LCD tv. How much will the equivalent cost me here? Or would it be better shipping over my current telly?

Thanks.

LCD is the in thing now. Advances in technology has put it on par with Plasma and future is definitely LCD. ChupaRustom all the TV channels in Doha are received thru satellite, Most of these channels use the standard broadcasting resolution, however very soon we should see some HD broadcasts. Watching movies using HD or Blu ray players on HD TV's gives you a very crisp and crystal clear pictures. Sony showroom displays HD movies on all their TV's displayed in their showroom.

This link is pretty helpfull to decide on whether to pick up a plasma or LCD

Just picked up a Samsung R81 32inch. Its beautiful and the quality of the picture is much better than an equivalent priced sony.

The terms HD Ready and Full HD are confusing. What they actually mean is HD Ready - refers to any display that is capable of accepting and displaying a high-definition signal at either 720p, 1080i or 1080p using a component video or digital input, and does not have a built-in HD-capable tuner. Full HD - refers to a display which is capable of 1080p So a TV can be HD Ready and Full HD

You don't want a standard LCD, yes those are cheap but nobody wants them anymore. You have to get a FULL HD one because all the technology is moving to HD now.

Don't get HD Ready, not Regular HD but FULL HD.

Samsung have this deal for 8,000 where they'll also give you a full surround sound package and dvd upscaling tuner for free! (it's worth 2,000 itself).

Also try to get anything that is above 8,000 contrast.

Finally try to have at least TWO HDMI (HD) Ports.

Latest technology - LCD

Pricier - LCD

Longer lifespan - Plasma (Plasma - 18000hrs vs LCD 11 to 13000hrs)

Better Constrast - Plasma

Better Definition - LCD

Normal TV viewing - Hard to differentiate

After some discussion with SA at Villagio last week - end up buying LG 42" Plasma for QR 3990

Ya get what ya pay for. Plasmas don't support any HD. But for regular TV viewing in normal definition, the difference in quality between Plasma and LCD is minute to the point where you can barely distinguish one from the other.

So a 40" Plasma TV for 3600 QRs is an excellent deal.

As for the best brand, IMO it's Sony. As for the best value for your money, i think Samsung.

I thought plasma is better than LCD for TV viewing.

Anyhow, if you are looking for an economic tv, check for the Haier. The 40" is for 3600 QRs with 2 years warranty

I bought a 46" LCD Samsung TV with full HD (1080i/p) for QR 12,345 from Virgin at Villagio. The full HD is what makes it expensive. Stay away from plasma albeit it's cheaper price tag.

HD is the bomb, but it's only worth it if you have equipment that sends an HD signal to the TV (i.e PS3, xbox, computer).

An HD TV does NOT improve the quality of normal TV viewing (Not even DVDs, unless you have an HD DVD player as well as HD-DVDs)
