Qatar's 8km Long Shopping Mall Coming to Doha

jane01
By jane01

Shopaholics get ready! Qatar is going to get a new shopping mall that's a whopping 8km's long! That's right, 900,000m2 of glorious floor space. Thats the equivalent of 110 football fields.

The Barwa Commercial Avenue is going to cost US $1.7bn (over QR6bn) and is expected to finish mid 2012. The project will be built by German firm Hochtief Construction and will also include offices and residential space.

bloody hell... righto errm Hammad hospital (A.K.A Death trap from hell) was supposed to be moved to another location in 1996 t withstand the population.. a whole new bigger better equipped hospital + the dramatic increase in people coming in... like a new mall is all well and good for prats to waltz around in there Ferrari's and Rang Rovers but there are people dying for gods sake im Qatari and i say please Qatar shape the hell up..please or we screwed..O_O

we biting off more than we can chew the pink dream of spending like mad is gonna be over sooner than we all think, most people here living of old money no one likes to say that but they are. priority's must be set straight.

To the mods:

Why did you delete my comment when I was correcting that this is NOT a mall?

Information that corrects illusion should not be censored. It’s a question of time, people will find out for themselves what really is this 8km commercial street.

It’s a commercial strip where you'll have the same type of shops that you get in any commercial old street of Doha, such as construction materials, clothes, barbershops, etc...

By marie_2• 12 Mar 2010 03:45

sorry, where are they building this 8km mall? And the ongoing construction at Al Nasser street is another mall?

I wonder, how many malls will they build for Qatar :)

I hope new shops will be there. Because if it is really that big (8km long!), we will have 8km of the same shops already located in all of the malls in Doha. Why not get new ones from other countries like Shanghai Tang from Hong Kong or a decent Japanese or Chinese restaurant. I hope the choices will be wide and the variety plenty. I think we are all sick of the same Carrefours, Aldos, Applebees, etc. etc. that are always a "standard" in all the malls of Doha. Not that they are bad, there are just too many of them OF THE SAME THING ALREADY. More choices please!

I drive by this thing every day. It will likely be 2014 before it's ready. I have worked in construction in a previous lifetime, there are only 29 months between now and mid 2012. A lot of the frame work is done, but I would be very amazed to see the whole thing completed by that deadline. Now the first shop and the "office" may open by that deadline to save face and all, but the whole thing wont be open. Oh and unless they are planning on parking structures behind the main building, you can count on a madhouse trying to find a parking spot.

This is NOT a shopping mall, it's a commercial avenue - basically a street with shops (Doha style) - the plumbers, the electrical products, the cloths, the barbers, etc... the usual boring stuff that you can find in any commercial street in Doha, except this one will be new and in the dusty desert on you way to the dusty industrial area... so don’t be to excited, it will be more of the same, except this time will be empty as the population in Doha is not enough to be in all these new locations at the same time!

no one seems to get paid in Doha anyway. Big contractors cant get money from banks on time, Contractors cant pay sub-contractors, sub-contractors owe workers money. The poor people building these massive complexes cant send money home, cant go home, therefore keep working in hope. I have not been paid by a certain company for nearly 5 months. That shopping mall will be 8 Kilometers long, but the parking lot will be designed for only 100 cars! and even thought most cars in Doha are SUV's (Land Cruizers anyone), the parking spaces will be a bit wider than a TIIDA, giving you plenty of chances to go home with a new dent.

Cheers.

just happened this Eid holidays. people are already inside the malls pushed out because of Family Day? what a faggg.. and a Father outside the mall the wife and kids inside the mall is not allowed to enter? CRAP! and take note if you are English or Arabi even you go alone for "man" You are allowed to get in. such a "RACIST" place. the Action of Ministry is fine but those who are ASSigned to guard the gates doesn't really do their job. Imagine if you are Indian Nepali Chinese or Filipino? sorry you can't enter during family days and that really pissed you up LOL. if they implement that kind of rules then there should be nobody is above on it. cool place but sick mentality of people. some people are traveling tooo long just to have some place to hang out especially holidays since there's really no place to go in Doha but instead they let the people go out from the malls LOL. for the new upcoming malls? good luck to the people who belong to third world country. my sympathy is with you.

Note: if you still insist to get inside the malls during family day? bring your mistress, girlfriend, hooker or even a bitch then you are allowed to get in because they consider those a FAMILY LOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

There will also be some great opportunities around that mall.

Maybe I should try to bring something new. I have many ideas and also good contacts aound the world for new concepts. hmmm... a lot of money to waste to round that 8km mall! hopefully parking space won't be just 1km and no crazy police will round to put the favorite yellow sticker on your car on the mall's parking lot itself!

and, with this money they spend building this crazy mall, may they also consider to increase the wages so we'll enjoy to shop as well and not just get your feet tired walking on a crazy 8 km!!!

.

.

can we jog inside?!

Dont get your hopes up for a new mall in the industrial area.

Qatar is using this area to make the best and largest industrial area in the world.

Hopefully it will divert traffic away from the center of town and shopping areas, and alow them to tear down the bad areas of town for new family themed parks and attractions in the future.

This is an exadurations, who would make 8km mall? I hope they put enough parking lots so people won't fight over parkings.

They should open other places such as an indoor for kids, I can't believe they don't have a good indoor or playground for kids.

I hope I will not be here by that time.

By anonymous• 2 Aug 2009 23:00

this is a place where you can spend an entire day wasting hard earned money by Shopping, eating junk food, watching a whatever movie and making sure to get out in time cause you never know how far you left your car behind. Maybe they have a car park where your have parked at X1009? or was it?

Wow what an ingenious way to beat the idea behind Burj Dubai. This is the other version of Burj Dubai, horizontal Burj al-Qatar, wonder how dumbstruck foreigners will be when someone says, hey we have an eight kilometer wonder shopping mall 20 kilometers away from Doha city. Like to visit it? just pay me 1000 riyals for the taxi and I will show you the whole mall, whole of Doha and take you back to the airport in half a day.

This place seems to be good for people who needs a good workout walk in A/C. Best weight reduction program available on the planet, if you don't eat that is.

Conclusion: what a colossal waste of money and resources! I really wish they had done something worthwhile. Like an underwater shopping mall. Hey that sounds perfect, doesn't it! duhhh

Simply missing Ikea.

Hey

Its a win win situation. They are simply giving shape to a place which has held immense potential. Creating a major trading hub doenst mean its going to be full of posh merchants. There may be recreation centres. For a moment, step back and consider this. The pay in qatar is so good now that just about anyone can afford tag heuer and debenhams. So, why are you complaining. Raising the bar of living standards is a good thing. Its sad that inflation had to die at such a premature stage.

By smart-me• 14 Jun 2009 00:50

I just wish that instead of putting up a mall.. they should put up something like the Atlantis of Dubai or something alike so people need not to spend more bucks in shopping. Recreation parks will give people a space to breathe and a getaway from the daily work routine.. just a suggestion...

Finally, i'm relieved that rather than monotonous droning over and over about "ohh how fabulous" so and so are someone has pointed out Qatars painfully obvious the so called 'development'

While we're on the subject of this 8 km long mall, which BTW is obviouly aimed to project qatar as all modern and stuff by being the 1st to build the worlds longest mall, bcoz were so DEVELOPLED; what is with all the housing compounds!!

Everywhere you look there they are scattered across the horizon in unison like some sort of communist residential accomodation plan,

"Retracting from prime locations". There was a master plan some years ago (mid 80's) which proposed relocating the main shops and business area away from the town centre and up towards Salwa. Maybe this is it.

But the reason for them not allowed to enter to malls because alot of harassement done by these peoples to any ladies in doha, as u know those labourers are far from their family and they have their "NEEDS" and all family in doha are out on friday.

And on top of these malls, they start family days, restrictions to workers..etc etc...like wht are they tryina prove? Buildin a park or somethin else in which all the people could benifit makes more sense than this 8km long shoppin mall. and qatar..a small tiny peninsula with less than 3 million population...watz d use of an 8 km long mall????..already ders 5-6 malls...y this one now?

Fubar said Firstly, it's *in* the industrial area, across the road from a Mowasalat bus station, car repair yards, laborer accomodation..."

So it would be a service to the bachelors who want to have a place to hang out on their only day off, and evenings after work. So that's a good plan. Why are people dissing the idea? Assumptions that "mall" automatically refers to Villagio, etc? It could be similar in ambiance but open to all and that would be great and show that the complaints have been heard and Qatar is doing something positive for the workers.

A road has a capacity like a pipe or a cable, exceed that and you get problems, like traffic gridlock, burst pipes or fires in overloaded systems. When I worked on the City Centre Mall everyone laughed at how much Car Parking was being provided, far more than could be used! No one could envisage that you cannot get a parking space now or that if you have to you face gridlock all around the Mall at busy times. Recent policies seemed to be aimed at driving business towards such centres, such as the recent tales of woe among traditional bakers being forced out of residential areas, such policies may result in profit for someone but will the gaiety of the nation be enhanced? Don't hink so.

as usual every Friday the bachelors cannot enter, Asia people too and the same shops of Villagio, Landmark, City Center etc, same food with Mc Donald, KFC, Burger King as usual etc etc. Why don't used the money for useful things as Beaches, clubs, cultural events, concert, parks, schools etc? Needed to learn from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur etc. Construction and construction, traffic and roads congested, excavation along all the city, dust everywhere etc.

Its not exactly a shopping mall, shopping mall would be one part of it ... Its actually for commercial purposes like mostly are show rooms of various companies, and office areas, and finicial district and some part for entertainment like cinema and malls like this ....

I know about these things because I am an engineer working on this project.

over one million, all malls are crowded on Fridays, or even on other days, so I bet there is place for an 8km shopping mall. If the parking place will be the same lenght, then it might be possible to find parking place.

It's true that had working hadn't killed anyone yet, but why to take risk?

It will become the new Salwa road when traffic is diverted down there when that road is dug up and renewed. It's in the middle of bloody no where, no one will open a boutique in that area.

How busy are the boutiques down the Pearl, I bet they are kicking themselves for not opening down Souk Waqif, it was packed last night never seen anything like it.

Will the Pearl EVER be that busy ? Will it ever generate that sort of atmosphere ?

Qatar right now does seem to be in a bit of a predicament, they have loads of money so they can keep building more and more projects yet they are unable to actually hire enough people to actually want to live, work or shop in what they are building.

In regards to office space, I imagine it's probably going to be affordable compared to westbay.

Ngourlay: If you read what's written on the Barwa website, the development is 8km long. It will contain malls. It doesn't say that the development will be an 8km long mall.

The Barwa press release also talks up the residential component of the development, describing the residents as 'elite'.

Wow... I wish I was 'elite' enough to live in the industrial area.

Actually the press release has a lot of great lines:

"The QR 4 billion investment Barwa is making in this project is a direct response to the shortage of office space suffered in the country because of influx of private business organisations in Qatar."

Where to begin... shortage of office space? Because all the towers in West Bay are full? Influx of private businesses to Qatar? Riiiight...

"Barwa Commercial Avenue is in the centre of all business owing to its key location that has been carefully studied and deemed to suit the needs of local, regional and international entrepreneurs."

It's in the Industrial Area. It would take about an hour to get to West Bay in normal traffic, and you call this 'the centre of all business'?

"Commercial Avenue is also to feature impressive shopping malls, housing top retail names and brands. Specialist shops are to be set up in the area to cater to the needs of the elite occupants."

Hahaha.. Elite occupants. The Pearl be damned, apparently. The hip crowd is moving to the Industrial area.

"The arrival of international investors in Qatar only means they will find investments such Barwa Commercial Avenue appealing and a major determinant in their decision to invest in Qatar."

Is that sentence supposed to mean something? And what, pray tell, are investors coming to Qatar now for??

"A solution that will draw in Business Tourists"

That, boys and girls, is what we call an oxymoron.

Nice. It'll never happen. Like the underground football stadium and air-conditioned cycling track.

Given the sloth of the locals, I can't imagine many people walking briskly for an hour and a half to visit shops at each end. It's obvious people would drive. Do you think that will be taken into account when planning the roads???

Can I suggest one improvement? They build a hill in the middle and theme it as an alpine village. Qatar needs more hills.

It's great that there are more choices in Qatar. If Qatar is to grow it needs to be in the news more often and sometimes that means that it needs to have grand structures.

Education City

Energy City

Sports City

Shopping City :P

Theres a very nice variation of projects in my opinion.

Tallg, this 'mall' will be different.

Firstly, it's *in* the industrial area, across the road from a Mowasalat bus station, car repair yards, laborer accomodation...

I have difficulty believing that it will be a 'mall' like Villagio or City Center. More likely, it is just 'commercial' space - wholesale and retail outlets focused on industrial clients.

But if talk about a new mall gets people excited, then go for it.

aviduser, i am pretty sure some 4-7 storey parking is included into this complex...

you guys just hear "Mall" and make the assumptions.. but the term of 'Mall' is much wider than only Zara, H&M and Starbucks... It also could be a SPA, a Movie theatre, some “winter complex”, "Wonderland", and God knows what else they might come up with.. so just wait and see..

Certaintly they will need people to fill up these malls for economics reasons, and having said so will be at the mercy of foreign expats and tourists. Given the prolong current recession, soon it will be another Dubai. Qatar needs to work hard to ensure things works out as planned. And when the buying stops, the malls will vanish.

#2 No Pay phones.

#3 They will forget to open a Cinema & Kids gaming zone & they will launch the project later which they will say it will finish in 2013 but it will only end in 2019

#4 They will fill it with signs (The rule of 2002 says No Smoking) people will use them to lean over while smoking!

#5 they will build an open air ice skating which will freeze the shit out of us!

#6 they will have family days on Weekends!

#7 They will have taxis all over the entrances & car lifts as well...

& the list goes on...

You know this is right out by the industrial area right ?

I thought is was primarily an outlet for a redesigned industrial area/Salwa Road.

Obviously that is the plan the reality will be a massive area with no parking and after a year the surface of the roads will have enormous pot holes and and will look like it's been there 50 years as no one will bother to maintain it.

You can actually see the fact it has no parking by the fact it's bordered on both sides by roads.

Isn't there a plan that his road will lead down the E ring and take the strain off Salwa with most of that being redeveloped.

That's if there is any money to do it.

whooopee!!...the most pressing need in Qatar right now...ANOTHER shopping mall...because of course the rest is in place isn't it?...like healthcare...we have a total of ONE big hospital that's hopelessly short of beds, doctors & nurses to take care of the population that's growing every day. Then there's public transport, buses that cover all major parts of Qatar & taxis that are available when one needs them & NOT 6 hours later & of course the numerous multi-storey car parks that dot the crowded areas of the city to ease the parking shortage...now since we have all of these essentials in place...we need that 8km. long shopping mall...because the mango's & starbucks in the already existing 5 malls aren't enough right?...so much for 'thinking ahead'...

It is a mixed development comprising commercial complexes, showrooms and homes. It is envisaged that there will be around 600 retail units and about 850 residential units and offices.

Thee will also be food courts, restaurants and malls. It will probably be delayed to :)

going to incorporate the much vaunted air conditioned cycle track I wonder. It may be essential for shoppers to get around in one day.

Tallg. I wouldn't bother opening a sweepstake on the completion date. People could be too old to spend any winnings.

shit loads of money on yet another boring Mall for the elite and rich; why don't they build something for the workers that are are building this crazy country?

Then one day there will be more shops in Doha than the entire population of Qatar. Then all shops will have one dedicated customer- the shopkeeper himself!

There will be "customer cum shopkeeper service"

and "May I/You help You/me"

And Bob the customer will bargain with Bob the shopkeeper!

i guess these floor spaces are intended for the businesses currently stood in Doha Jadeed... since Doha jadeed area in the brink for demolition... upon transfering them thereafter, another set of works is planned for Old Doha town facelift.

Wow, fantastic, finally somewhere to do some shopping in Doha!

Must agree with Tallg though, I will place my bet on "unforseen delays" until 2013 (and a 1/2)

Sometimes you just can't help thinking that this country has it's priorities wrong. Oh well, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Shall we run a sweepstake on how far past 'mid 2012' the actual completion date will be?

And I bet it will have Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Mothercare, Carrefour, Next, Mango, River Island, Body Shop and the list goes on.

With less than 2 million people living in the country, who will visits these shops?
