Qatar's 8km Long Shopping Mall Coming to Doha
Shopaholics get ready! Qatar is going to get a new shopping mall that's a whopping 8km's long! That's right, 900,000m2 of glorious floor space. Thats the equivalent of 110 football fields.
The Barwa Commercial Avenue is going to cost US $1.7bn (over QR6bn) and is expected to finish mid 2012. The project will be built by German firm Hochtief Construction and will also include offices and residential space.

Sensational info. I look forward to seeing more.

I'm moving to qatar in a couple of weeks, alone
What are these family-days?
k.scarmon,
The most realistic and honest comment I have read from a Qatari.
I totally agree with you. I hope you will be successful to pass the message to your government before Qatar loose control to others and its identity!
bloody hell... righto errm Hammad hospital (A.K.A Death trap from hell) was supposed to be moved to another location in 1996 t withstand the population.. a whole new bigger better equipped hospital + the dramatic increase in people coming in... like a new mall is all well and good for prats to waltz around in there Ferrari's and Rang Rovers but there are people dying for gods sake im Qatari and i say please Qatar shape the hell up..please or we screwed..O_O
we biting off more than we can chew the pink dream of spending like mad is gonna be over sooner than we all think, most people here living of old money no one likes to say that but they are. priority's must be set straight.
god help us all
Yes that is good news but why? who will buy shop are goods see and go to indestrial area thier is no road .if road will come .waw thanks
8km shopping mall! For what?
Got no idea, wts their calculation
To the mods:
Why did you delete my comment when I was correcting that this is NOT a mall?
Information that corrects illusion should not be censored. It’s a question of time, people will find out for themselves what really is this 8km commercial street.
It’s a commercial strip where you'll have the same type of shops that you get in any commercial old street of Doha, such as construction materials, clothes, barbershops, etc...
sorry, where are they building this 8km mall? And the ongoing construction at Al Nasser street is another mall?
I wonder, how many malls will they build for Qatar :)
...listen to the sound of silence....
u ll welcome i ll open a cycle rent shop there for u guys hope u can shop and excrise...................
thats a coOl idea Hats off to me...:)
hopin to rent a shop there....cya soOn...:D
I hope new shops will be there. Because if it is really that big (8km long!), we will have 8km of the same shops already located in all of the malls in Doha. Why not get new ones from other countries like Shanghai Tang from Hong Kong or a decent Japanese or Chinese restaurant. I hope the choices will be wide and the variety plenty. I think we are all sick of the same Carrefours, Aldos, Applebees, etc. etc. that are always a "standard" in all the malls of Doha. Not that they are bad, there are just too many of them OF THE SAME THING ALREADY. More choices please!
but qatar dont have any fun place where you can go and enjoy except malls and corniche, loot at dubai.they should build that kinda stuff rather than the tall buildings & mall where few people can go for shopping.
n no family day i guess
is a strip of RENTABLE shops 0f 10x25 meters each unit. with mezzanine half the size..ist and 2nd floor are typical offices..function varies some how on other types.
By the way this is composed of five types.
Type 1 with 7 landmarks
type 2 with 7 landmarks
Type 3 5landmarks
Type 4 7lm
type 5 10lm
At least, the other malls would be less crowded...

very good.....
waiting for this...
To those who said that this country is crazy, just would like to mention and remind them that in this country you may leave your car, house, office, unlocked, and no one will touch it. ONLY this can happen in QATAR.
It means that there will be more places to go and to shop into...it's a sign of progress....
I drive by this thing every day. It will likely be 2014 before it's ready. I have worked in construction in a previous lifetime, there are only 29 months between now and mid 2012. A lot of the frame work is done, but I would be very amazed to see the whole thing completed by that deadline. Now the first shop and the "office" may open by that deadline to save face and all, but the whole thing wont be open. Oh and unless they are planning on parking structures behind the main building, you can count on a madhouse trying to find a parking spot.

as every1 said.
finally some new place to go

Barwa is doing Good! (Build /developing Qatar)
it is more like a commercial strip rather than a mall.
-"Seize the days make your life extraordinary!"
this is the most project BCA (Barwa Commercial Avenue ) i work on it :P
there must be new features !
-: Kindness is a Language the deaf can hear and the blind can see :-
Family day? wht crap it is... ones i went to villagio and the security said it was family day... while turning back i couldnt believe my eyes when two guys were passing the security check without any haste...
went back to ask. damn it.. the answer i got was? "only if u r a European, American u can pass by"...
Ohh God. pls help these people..
that's good,building additional mall then for family day?what a joke!hahaha
i am humbly agree with u...
Why not build a theme park like Disneyland??? A lot of malls around already.
thumbssupp..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also it is important to have public gardens geen, green,
concentrating on the environment+ Sea beach " public".
also on cornich area if can be cheap restuarants with good service ...
new Ideas like sooq wakef ... Not only bulding shops, shops, after that we feel that we are living in car parkings and stores...
but i tell from my heart Qatar became bueatifull more and more ... Good bless qatar .. Thank you thank you...
That ain't a MAll!! I remember my ibang lahi engr. friend. takes hundreds of times to learn this and that!
KARWA might need to start a taxi service to roam around the mall itself ;)
qatar is growing very fastly...best ov luck
Lets hope it will not be another city center, to make us roam around the parking lot.
BEST REGARDS
sorry to pop all ur bubbles but this mall news might not even be true bcuz of the recent economical crises its not even possible for it t be even built!
When I took my wife to HAMAD hospital , she deliver my first son at exactly 9 am .. She sat until 4 pm in the waiting room and the reason that there is no room to accomodate her and the child ... For God's sake .. You think a deeper,,, QATAR is growing and needs more of the existing facilities,,other than MALLS MALLS MALLS AND MALLS
there is even NO place like disney land or wounder world,
thats more important than 8km MALL
best regards,
Jehad Al-saify
Nic is correct, a friend of mine is working also in these project and he told me its not a mall, its a commercial/resindential building normally we can find in the street.
DON'T LET FANTASY ROB YOU OF YOUR REAL LIFE BEAUTY
sheena
I just wait it to be completely built!!! then u can hear my say..
have u seen the movie 2012?the prediction is the world will end in december 2012..so if it happens it we will just enjoy it for several months...lol
where u r expecting?reply soon
They will be hundred of different and separate shops!! The title is missleading the others who dont know about this project!
I hope i'm still in DOHA when that mall start to open...
This is NOT a shopping mall, it's a commercial avenue - basically a street with shops (Doha style) - the plumbers, the electrical products, the cloths, the barbers, etc... the usual boring stuff that you can find in any commercial street in Doha, except this one will be new and in the dusty desert on you way to the dusty industrial area... so don’t be to excited, it will be more of the same, except this time will be empty as the population in Doha is not enough to be in all these new locations at the same time!
cant they have a place to enjoy than having shopping malls everywhere..... no1s gonna shop evryday... wish they would have an place where ppl like teenagers and youngsters to have their time.....
Got fedup walking in the malls always... :p
I really appreciate the kind of topics you post here. Thanks for sharing us a great information that is actually helpful. Good day!

how much is the length in km of Doha?????

"It could be a picture
It could be a medicine
it could be a bullet
depends on how you see it
But it is not a cultural ignorance
and it is not blind following ....
Amazing.. more shopping to come..
Hi
All it is our Project and it is not a 8 km shopping mall but 8 km long Shopping area, all the area will be rented to private parties and they can start any business there. It will be individual shops/offices. not like City Center or Lulu
That is why barwa are firing people?
Construction of future ghost towns in the middle of the dusty desert!
I wonder what parking will cost?
This could be used as a Shopping cum exercise trip.
hope their be more park's
it may have KFC,McDonalds,Carerfour,Dunkin DOnuts,Pizza Hut,etc can't wait for it to be finished
no one seems to get paid in Doha anyway. Big contractors cant get money from banks on time, Contractors cant pay sub-contractors, sub-contractors owe workers money. The poor people building these massive complexes cant send money home, cant go home, therefore keep working in hope. I have not been paid by a certain company for nearly 5 months. They say if I take men away I will never get paid, but if I continue to work we will eventually get paid..OUTCOME...Qatar is thriving but noones getting paid...answers on a postcard please
Its true thats its about 8 KM but its not shopping mall, infact shopping mall is one of its part ... Its actually commercial avenue so basically its related to buissness stuff but a portion of it has shopping malls, entertainment and apartments.
Its a great place to hang out for the people of Barwa Hosuing, Barwa City, Karwa Hosuing, Musaimer and Abu-Hamoor and even Wakra ('coz there is one connecting road from there also)
No, the full basement is parking so its mean 8 km parking also ... now have fun ;)

Yes Kinokuniya, the most complete and normally big bookstore. A few available in Kuala Lumpur. Never seen any in Middle East.
They need to consider having a big bookstore like Times, etc. Not another lousy "Jarir" please.

wow..........thx qatar....
once this 8km shopping mall project completes, all the 2 million population will flock to this mall and existing small vendors has to windup their business due to fewer customer. It is adivsable for the new vendors not to take any loan from any where as they will find themselves in water.
Kumar
should b have more clean washing room/toilet and rest place....
welcome but i think we want something else from government except mall or shoping center .especially 4 our children.
And make more Beaches Resorts out of Doha!........ And a Nice Play Ground for Kids! Made of wood and grass, trees ......
I THINK IT IS BETTER TO HAVE A TRANSPORT SERVICE ALONG THAT SHOPPING MALL. WHAT THEY WILL DO THEY WILL INTRODUCE A TRANSPORT SERVICE FROM THEIR OWN FOR A LESS AMOUNT & THEY WILL INCREASE THE PRICE WHEN EVERY THING GOING WELL.SAME AS WHAT THEY DID FOR KARWA TAXI.
BY THE WAY WE HAVE TO WASTE OUR ALL MONEY IN DOHA WHAT WE EARNING WITHOUT SENDING TO OUR COUNTRIES.
APART FROM THAT , GOOD HELP FOR POOR HUSBANDS. YOU CANT HELP WITHOUT SHOPPING WITH YOUR SMART WIVES.
I AM AFFRAID AS I AM MARRIED TOOOOOO
REGARDS.
v cud put on jogging shoes and run d length every day...put the dimension to good use eh?wt else is it rly good fer?other dn being d same ol same ol'..fer the upper elite class..
*NYK*
That shopping mall will be 8 Kilometers long, but the parking lot will be designed for only 100 cars! and even thought most cars in Doha are SUV's (Land Cruizers anyone), the parking spaces will be a bit wider than a TIIDA, giving you plenty of chances to go home with a new dent.
Cheers.
Power to the non believers, it’s a great feeling to have and hold.
just happened this Eid holidays. people are already inside the malls pushed out because of Family Day? what a faggg.. and a Father outside the mall the wife and kids inside the mall is not allowed to enter? CRAP! and take note if you are English or Arabi even you go alone for "man" You are allowed to get in. such a "RACIST" place. the Action of Ministry is fine but those who are ASSigned to guard the gates doesn't really do their job. Imagine if you are Indian Nepali Chinese or Filipino? sorry you can't enter during family days and that really pissed you up LOL. if they implement that kind of rules then there should be nobody is above on it. cool place but sick mentality of people. some people are traveling tooo long just to have some place to hang out especially holidays since there's really no place to go in Doha but instead they let the people go out from the malls LOL. for the new upcoming malls? good luck to the people who belong to third world country. my sympathy is with you.
Note: if you still insist to get inside the malls during family day? bring your mistress, girlfriend, hooker or even a bitch then you are allowed to get in because they consider those a FAMILY LOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
into city centre on a friday afternoon, open your eyes.....
Power to the non believers, it’s a great feeling to have and hold.
$2003$
is it near MES indian school and the way to INdustrial area??.because i have some barwa avenues there
And they can also shop on Saturday and Sunday!
They cant shop on a Friday, what change will this shopping mall have. That leaves 1.2 million left that can.. but will they??
Power to the non believers, it’s a great feeling to have and hold.
Why do they not invest money in more useful things like a water park or other attractions so families dont get a flight to Dubai etc and dont want to leave here after 2 years because of lack of things to do.
Wake up and smell the coffee ! and listen to the people for a change and ask them want they want and need.
sorry cant accpet ur coment.
Some ladies are going to be happy! Have fun! ;)
You will need a GPS to find the store desired, find your way out to the right parking... good luck!
There will also be some great opportunities around that mall.
Maybe I should try to bring something new. I have many ideas and also good contacts aound the world for new concepts. At the beginning, my plan is to find a company to work for and better know the country, the people. However, once there, I will have to meet with potential partners/investors as I have some very good business ideas I want to develop.
Life goes on!
May be big traffic jam will be arising.in that area
i want to inquire about rent for residential appt.is ther any marketing manager avilable now, please send me the details@[email protected].
Also Novita 77,dont worry i will visit and check all these shops...lolz
The idea of relocation of town centre is fine. You missed my point. Borders was retracting from prime locations last year. So it's unlikely that they will open a store here. Even if they do, it will be backed by some hobnob sponser
2012? INSHALLAH! MORE LIKELY 2212 THE WAY THINGS WORK
it's another place to hangout..and to those who are bored they have place to walk around..
i agree with you this mall is suitable for china not qatar !
I got fren work on this project, He say is shop lot only. not shopping mall. Pls confirm and advice
eh!
Well the reason why we have to have MORE buildings MORE parking MORE SPACE is because there is WAY too many expacts in Qatar. Here’s a thought, if you don’t like it here and consider Qataris “SLOTHES” then why don’t you go back to your perfect countries “ sure with less salaries and no benefits” but hey THEY ARE PERFECT so the money doesn’t matter. Theleast you can do is not bitch about Qatar all the time and show respect!
they can do something different such as amusement park instead of just making shopping malls.

Hi friends,
I will joining the team soon. So how is the working condition over there since the progress are ahead from
schedule. BTW, u r under which department???
I will do walking exercise inside 8 KM mall. No need to go to corniche during summer time.
Money should be spent in the right way.
Very food news...............
thanks for ur updates!!!!!!!
Hi,
As I had passing through this message , may I know the condition of job?
How is the working environment in Hochtief for that Particular project?
Your response is appreciated. Thank you
hmmm... a lot of money to waste to round that 8km mall! hopefully parking space won't be just 1km and no crazy police will round to put the favorite yellow sticker on your car on the mall's parking lot itself!
and, with this money they spend building this crazy mall, may they also consider to increase the wages so we'll enjoy to shop as well and not just get your feet tired walking on a crazy 8 km!!!

can we jog inside?!

"NOBODY DIES A VIRGIN, LIFE F**KS US ALL!"
I had seen one article.
A gold ornament jewelry shop owner at Dubai mall ( Middle east largest mall ) not had a single deal for 3 months after opening Dubai mall,
Now Dude if you are planning to invest ,,,, take care ,,,, or research the market !!!!!
after all its a 1.5ml pop only and with surplus of multi dozens Supper shopping malls,
Best off Luck,
http://www.barwa.com.qa/english/ainkhalid.html
It will be nice if they build Indoor Theme Park!
yes .. i hope we will get all the shops, around the world in one roof..its a brilliant success.....!!!
is the car are permited to run inside? Since it was equivalent to 10 football field, maybe i rather stay in house to save my feet..
Wish once this mall ready but not only for family day at friday cuz my family not with me here.....
8 km long.....yeah,for those who are having big tummy and big butts this is a good exercise for you people!
this will be very big and also beautiful i believe, it means there are more places to go for buying our things very soon, 2012 or 2013 is around the corner, nice one.
you can enjoy strolling this mall on 2011.
Dont get your hopes up for a new mall in the industrial area.
Qatar is using this area to make the best and largest industrial area in the world.
Hopefully it will divert traffic away from the center of town and shopping areas, and alow them to tear down the bad areas of town for new family themed parks and attractions in the future.
Everybody is excited about this 8km Mall, better stay at home sleeping otherwise you'll end up being upset coz when you are about to enter the Mall the guards will tell you that " Sorry Sir, it's Family Day!"
you r right
This is an exadurations, who would make 8km mall? I hope they put enough parking lots so people won't fight over parkings.
They should open other places such as an indoor for kids, I can't believe they don't have a good indoor or playground for kids.
I hope I will not be here by that time.
this is a place where you can spend an entire day wasting hard earned money by Shopping, eating junk food, watching a whatever movie and making sure to get out in time cause you never know how far you left your car behind. Maybe they have a car park where your have parked at X1009? or was it?
Wow what an ingenious way to beat the idea behind Burj Dubai. This is the other version of Burj Dubai, horizontal Burj al-Qatar, wonder how dumbstruck foreigners will be when someone says, hey we have an eight kilometer wonder shopping mall 20 kilometers away from Doha city. Like to visit it? just pay me 1000 riyals for the taxi and I will show you the whole mall, whole of Doha and take you back to the airport in half a day.
This place seems to be good for people who needs a good workout walk in A/C. Best weight reduction program available on the planet, if you don't eat that is.
Conclusion: what a colossal waste of money and resources! I really wish they had done something worthwhile. Like an underwater shopping mall. Hey that sounds perfect, doesn't it! duhhh
I expect a large food court, having different styles of cuisines from all parts of the world.
so what's the difference from small shopping malls?...? the wide space?...nothing... it's all the same...all items are expensive, food clothes everything!!..they should think of something that will benefits all..specially for the expats...we are getting salary ONCE every 3 months! do you think we can be able to spend our time & money with this luxurious malls?...
ahhhh...we are living by faith now...may God bless us all!
I would like to say STOP BUILDING SHOPING MALLS i would like to see more play aereasfor the younger kids, with swings, slides and many more. There is no place to take my 4 years old dauther to play ,why don't you build "AQUA PARK" or other atractions.
your so negative and synical
Let's hope they won't name it "QMALL" :)
yeah!it realy god cos Qatar gruwing very, very fast and they thinking about future. All the best&respect.see you in 2012
Fantastic, Because I need to walk and in the summertime I can not walk outside, so it will be nice.
if it will happen soon many visitor will come in qatar. it means to profit financially and as a rrupatation
dinesh ever thing good all good must be go on said thanking
This is more than enough to window-shop. 8 km is a long walk, exhausting... But maybe a better way to lose weight at least once a week on a non-family day.
wow i hope they have a synthetic track in there coz i love window shoppin while im jogging lol
seriously though i think its gonna b great for qatar to have a mall this big, coz its gonna have loads of new shop's n showrooms and factory outlet's with brands some haven't even heard of and with that obviously there's gonna b competition n thus sales, special offer's and many other stuff were missing out on, i think its gonna b great
so ican open good computer mall there tooo i hope to get ready soon that co-plex and rent also will be cheapppp
As it is nearest to Industrial Area let's hope the weekends are for the SINGLES!!!!!!!!!!!
Kul : HASBIYALLAHU WANIGHMAL WAKEEL...
WE NEED A WATER PARK!! * Decent one *
i am just thinking who will go to shop there????? it is waste of money but anyway we expitrates will be able to get more job in this global crisis thanx for barwa.i am confused why this gulf nation are competing for there title race, give this labour what you have good place to sleep, tereat housemaids in good waay give them food and rest help people dieing with oput knowing what they have then this shops will be broke in days but the people if you could help will remeber forever this nation.
i am feeling alone this wo rld is runnin for no thing and the cap italism is killing gulf nation...........
mens gold chains
barwa as far as i know is not for lower income families but for the middle/higher income families. i even applied but my slot had not been called , maybe because have a lower income salary. i have to share rent with other family which i think would be much better that living on a desert place called Barwa???? i hope they will change or provide much better changes in the future.

ikea ...i hope so too ,we need good shop like that .
also we do not need more mall ,we need good sea line...etc
Ikea will join Qatar this time.
Simply missing Ikea.
On the other side, Qatar should have surely made a feasibility study on this development - more learned than Dubai's giddy abandonment of development actions.
All the best Qatar!

for jogging, when humidity increased... :-)
I hope it's for wholesalers and moderately leased. This will solve the problems of existing businesses
This thread is getting longer & longer. May be it will reach 8Km.....
that's exciting..i love malling and i'm sure the people will enjoy it..
I hope it will be free from those cheap chinese merchandise that they sell at lulu, carrefour, safari etc. I hope to see lego, sketchers, rollerblade, parrot (UK) and some of that stuff that i could not find anywhere in doha.
Say Friday is Family day
So most of the shops will become no custormers
I hope lot of employment will be araised in that 8 KM shopping malls.Again for the employers/workers where to settle them.Again hike in rents.?Infrastructure to be improved much more.Another malls to visit on Fridays if bacholers are allowed.
If you were to spread out all the shops of Souk Waqif in a single line of shops, one shop wide by n shops long how long would souk waqif be?
If the pace of work at the Ras Abu Aboud R/A is anything to go by, this 8 kms mall may never materialise in the life time any of the present members of QL.
I didnt go through all posts..
but what i know its not shopping mall..
its just like Salawa or Air port Road..
====
easy come easy go...
big space, additional business, another job oppurtunities. great job!
"a step towards the right path is two steps away from evil"
Dreaming...they will be a lot of shop with no customers.....and what a best thing is "Friday is a BachelorDay" hahahhaha such a stupid joke and it is happening here in Qatar!
It seems the author is mis-informed, its just a plain commercial strip, probaly lot better than our Salwa Road and Al Sadd.....
no worries ...
man there is a big car parking in the basement .. enough for all visitors and residents and offices ...
It should be designrd as a very long mall and each shop having 2 open sides. One side should be reserved for the bachelors and the other side for families.
i think from now till 2012 they will also plan to build 2 or 3 more malls
May be good idea to add Swimming pool, golf club
Look like health club, fitness first etc business is going to loose as we don't need to be member anymore.
Three story is enough for enough shops but must build 7 Stories for CAR PARKING, if not we will get QR 500 fine for all the time.
Good place to walk to and fro
What should I do in this mall?
So we don't need to be member at Fitness Fit Center. 8 Km is long enough to walk.
May be the longest mall in the world.
long mall??
ohh common!! why always a shopping mall! why they will not build a place for recreation that can make a people laugh & enjoy? why they will not build like a comedy bar, disco bar, theme park & others for recreation during night time? go to shopping is getting bored on this place, u spend a lot of money using credit cards after spending got a big problem of paying bills...build something differrent that can make people enjoy after work...
less than 2 million people will visit this mall for entertainment.
Its going to be a long mall. not a series of buildings.
It will be very hard to know where to go for the Shopping.
Is it going to be like the Harrods or just a flea market?
i hope so too Lorena. Been looking for Ikea =) Good stuff..
I'm sure there are lots of car parks. The only question is how far will the car parks be.. And say you wanna move from one mall to another, would there be like free karts to take you there? *dream on* I don't wanna hop from one mall to another and walk back to where I parked. Geez I can't even stand to cruise the entire of Villaggio!
Where is it located at?
Of course..
Hey
Its a win win situation. They are simply giving shape to a place which has held immense potential. Creating a major trading hub doenst mean its going to be full of posh merchants. There may be recreation centres. For a moment, step back and consider this. The pay in qatar is so good now that just about anyone can afford tag heuer and debenhams. So, why are you complaining. Raising the bar of living standards is a good thing. Its sad that inflation had to die at such a premature stage.
I just wish that instead of putting up a mall.. they should put up something like the Atlantis of Dubai or something alike so people need not to spend more bucks in shopping. Recreation parks will give people a space to breathe and a getaway from the daily work routine.. just a suggestion...
Finally, i'm relieved that rather than monotonous droning over and over about "ohh how fabulous" so and so are someone has pointed out Qatars painfully obvious the so called 'development'
While we're on the subject of this 8 km long mall, which BTW is obviouly aimed to project qatar as all modern and stuff by being the 1st to build the worlds longest mall, bcoz were so DEVELOPLED; what is with all the housing compounds!!
Everywhere you look there they are scattered across the horizon in unison like some sort of communist residential accomodation plan,
seriously folks... ok ride the "lets get rich quick by building and renting real estste" but common people at building and planning?!?!?
There are no neigbourhoods!
Hope it will be a mall like the glorious City Center and not like the sucking villagio.
I'll be really enjoying it then.
Whooo.
I like your comment popcorngirl, these govt forget about them. they are not allowed in major malls in doha, they are not allowed to walk in corniche during friday. they are only free on friday, but friday is a family day... where they go???????
I like ur observation
as i know, it's built on the way to the industry area or along the industry area, so what kind of shopping area it's going to be?
"Retracting from prime locations". There was a master plan some years ago (mid 80's) which proposed relocating the main shops and business area away from the town centre and up towards Salwa. Maybe this is it.
reply to ur comment :
"you see all this laborers just wondering the streets with nothing to do, no nice shade to relax in, and of course, no A/C AT ALL!"
we should thanks to them....i agree with that and theres no reason for not allowing those labourers to enter any shopping mall.
But the reason for them not allowed to enter to malls because alot of harassement done by these peoples to any ladies in doha, as u know those labourers are far from their family and they have their "NEEDS" and all family in doha are out on friday.
i hope the size of the parking lot is twice the size of the mall..............cos i hate spent hours just looknig for parking
Don't dispair
It will have carpeted driveway for people unwilling to join the marathon from fuddruckers to debenhams. Once this trial is over. They will build an even bigger mall with PMVs (portable mobility vehicles) becoming the standard of comuting within the mall
Dubai has many amusement parks....wht does qatar have???...not even a water theme park!!...jus some bida park...or whteva its called!!!
a better idea would be to take care of the internal roads in qatar...i think its totally crap...tryina be a developed country..they should be lookin at the base frm where they should grow up...no point otherwise. another thin..yes qatar is tryina develop n stuff...its really good...but some kinda negative stuffs like family only...restriction to bachelors etc etc wil always be a barrier to developement
Yet another mall, i don't think qatar has any planning, whteva they do, the place is super boring and etc etc...
And on top of these malls, they start family days, restrictions to workers..etc etc...like wht are they tryina prove? Buildin a park or somethin else in which all the people could benifit makes more sense than this 8km long shoppin mall. and qatar..a small tiny peninsula with less than 3 million population...watz d use of an 8 km long mall????..already ders 5-6 malls...y this one now?
GEEZ you are dreaming-In this country you expect human rights?respect, difnity?unrestrained movement?etc. etc. etc.?I WILL CUT MY THROAT IF THAT HAPPENS HERE...MALLS SHOULD BE OPEN TO EVRYONE AND NOT THE ELITE SELECT FEW..GEES TALK ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS..EVRYONE SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT AND DIGNITY AND SHOULD NOT BE RESTRAINED FOR MOVEMENT..WE ALREADY HAVE PASSPORT AND VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR THAT..
kinokuniya...no way.
Borders....they are retracting from prime locations.
You are asking too much.
The biggest feat I have ever seen is the opening of billabong
la jolla, you can see in my thread (which I posted on page 1) that the there will be two levels of underground parking going throughout the WHOLE strip
@vegas, who are 'they'?
@kathrin, who said that they're NOT building more parks?
Lol some people make it seems like it's this strip or nothing.
This is a project which is added on TOP of all the other projects going through the country.

I dont think there'll be a parking problem if the parking area is 10 km long. I only hope that this won't cause more traffic jams in the industrial area...its bad enough as it is
ohh! i can't wait, but when does it finish??
I assume that the "I" means that you are working for the company that's building it.
Rather a large task for a single bloke.
i am building this 8 KM mall. i may assist you, if you require any information.........
Biggest Mall in Qatar? Hope they will build up enough parking lots ...... But who will come for shopping ? The sellers of otehr malls?
sorry, im agoraphobic.^_^
"I don't go back on my words, that's my way of ninja"
yep human right are not in the qatari vocabulary despite allll the conference about ``fair trade `` and stuff in sheraton...
The rich Qatari have what they want...
The cornish is the only thing you can get for free here.
And only if your a family
You think they care about a poor working family???
The kids play in the parking garage where I live...
No grass for miles...
But at least the parents have a job...
Better than searching for stuff in a land fill...
Even the projects in Chicago have basketball courts and play areas...Of cocurse you might get shot....
You can't teach experience...
Hope to see a Tim Hortons coffee shop for a change!
Chili's, Applebees, and 300 random fashion and apparel stores. I hate to beat a dead horse and be so cynical without a suggestion for improvement, but surely they can make use of that much space with something else other than another mall?
Won't this new shopping Mall take the shine off the other semi big malls like Villagio,City Centre, Landmark etc
It can be a great Pooondi point for all scounderls in Doha.. :0)
Marlboro Lights - Selected fine Tobaccos
I might have a chance to get car parking at City Centre Shooping centre at week end
Yep! That’s cool, but have u’ll ever imagined about the traffic gonna cause? Yeh currently its taking 1-1.5hrs to reach doha during office hours this may could increase up to 2.-2.5hrs.
OH Lets hope NOT……
I strongly recommend Infrastructure should be first expansion of roads & then these fancy/high class malls etc…..
In Reality…….
good thing, to spend some weekends.
I think this is an interesting topic , if you want me to quote you about this topic send me a private email about your feeelings about shopping Malls in Qatar before 2-30pm
Fubar said Firstly, it's *in* the industrial area, across the road from a Mowasalat bus station, car repair yards, laborer accomodation..."
So it would be a service to the bachelors who want to have a place to hang out on their only day off, and evenings after work. So that's a good plan. Why are people dissing the idea? Assumptions that "mall" automatically refers to Villagio, etc? It could be similar in ambiance but open to all and that would be great and show that the complaints have been heard and Qatar is doing something positive for the workers.

Don't want no drama,
No, no drama, no, no, no, no drama
I think the country should invest more on it's infrastructure !!

Now to reach salwa it takes 4hrs.....hope it will not take 4 days to reach once the mall opens....
MashAllah ... keep it up !!
thanks to the ROYAL HIGHNESS FAMILY... for allowing infrastructures with good objectives...and which definitely would open opportunities to the common people...
therefore - to the management of this company... wishing you all the best..
well for sure it will have a dive shop.....
and..... perfume shop?????
good luck.....
next month.. for sure Dubai will built a 20Km's shopping mall.... just wait and see
A road has a capacity like a pipe or a cable, exceed that and you get problems, like traffic gridlock, burst pipes or fires in overloaded systems. When I worked on the City Centre Mall everyone laughed at how much Car Parking was being provided, far more than could be used! No one could envisage that you cannot get a parking space now or that if you have to you face gridlock all around the Mall at busy times. Recent policies seemed to be aimed at driving business towards such centres, such as the recent tales of woe among traditional bakers being forced out of residential areas, such policies may result in profit for someone but will the gaiety of the nation be enhanced? Don't hink so.
Well I think we need more cultural sites, I have personnally submitted a great and fantastic project for the nation, I'm still waiting for the answer! I keep fingers crossed and wait for a ..positive response incha Allah.
If this project is accepted, it will be a fantastic place for people to learn, discover and play. It will be a huge one!
They should consider the car parking, now a days, the car parking is a great problem in qatar
as usual every Friday the bachelors cannot enter, Asia people too and the same shops of Villagio, Landmark, City Center etc, same food with Mc Donald, KFC, Burger King as usual etc etc. Why don't used the money for useful things as Beaches, clubs, cultural events, concert, parks, schools etc? Needed to learn from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur etc. Construction and construction, traffic and roads congested, excavation along all the city, dust everywhere etc.
Its not exactly a shopping mall, shopping mall would be one part of it ... Its actually for commercial purposes like mostly are show rooms of various companies, and office areas, and finicial district and some part for entertainment like cinema and malls like this ....
I know about these things because I am an engineer working on this project.
over one million, all malls are crowded on Fridays, or even on other days, so I bet there is place for an 8km shopping mall. If the parking place will be the same lenght, then it might be possible to find parking place.
It's true that had working hadn't killed anyone yet, but why to take risk?
It's non sense for bachelors, i'm sure every friday (w/c is the rest day for the workers) will be FAMILY DAY..
NOT interested in it.
"Knowledge is best used when shared."
Doha is flocked with nothing else but shopping malls.......
so looking for more!!!!!! bravo.
cant wait for this..
According to a thread from tall_g they are expanding into Qatar sometime soon.
:)
They must fix walking(moving) tracks like airports to cover 8 km quickly.
Please get Ikea here!
- INK
Don't raise your hopes too high on normal days also traffic on this road is jam packed imagine when the mall opens.
Access to the mall will be a huge problem R/A now also cannot cope with the traffic
[img_assist|nid=50852|title=hmm|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
these guys want to build everything at the same time.... I tell u one thing....some building here looks beautiful from outside but u wont realise its real crap until u get in....poor quality finishes.....uncomplete work....this is going to happen with this 8km mall as well....unfinished and poor quality.
Google Earth will show about a quarter of Qatar covered with this structure :)
It is so sad that after a long week of hard work (and by hard I mean... hard hard hard), you see all this laborers just wondering the streets with nothing to do, no nice shade to relax in, and of course, no A/C AT ALL!
So I agree with you, some of these rich people's money should be given to say "thank you for building my country", by doing things to entertain this people, who are here by themselves and I can only imagine how much they're missing their families back home... It's so hard...
Sorry, I get carried away in this subject!
yes this area is full of traffic and i just wonder if this 8km mall will have shoppers all i can see its facing towards the deserts.
Wow cant wait to see this Long Shoppin Mall....
its located near doha industrial area and the road in front of it is always loaded with trucks to industrail area. so it will make more traffic blocks.
How I wish this longest mall wont have schedule of Family Day.... otherwise, it's useless again!
Ohh! I hope there's IKEA store... would love so so so much ^_^
Enjoy Life!
There was a time when we only had two decent shops, The Centre and Salaam Studio (now gone) and would have welcomed another. In fact we did when the Mall opened on the D Ring Road. It appears to be going from one extreme to the other.
repeated stores will be repeated.......
salahadin
of sure families, shoping people and children may enjoy going malls but what about youth " the fruit" where the will go??????????????????
If the concern person would ask me:
I WOULD REPLY:

Fubar,
I didnt mean poor asian laborers, Those i feel sorry for as well..believe it or not, But lets not forget that this is a sort of BUSINESS mentality which i dont agree with and wasnt invented here...
I was speaking about others who knows how is it back home and how is it for them here and still full of ARROGANCE :)
It will become the new Salwa road when traffic is diverted down there when that road is dug up and renewed. It's in the middle of bloody no where, no one will open a boutique in that area.
How busy are the boutiques down the Pearl, I bet they are kicking themselves for not opening down Souk Waqif, it was packed last night never seen anything like it.
Will the Pearl EVER be that busy ? Will it ever generate that sort of atmosphere ?
Qatar right now does seem to be in a bit of a predicament, they have loads of money so they can keep building more and more projects yet they are unable to actually hire enough people to actually want to live, work or shop in what they are building.
You're right, alhappydude.
In their home countries, most asian laborers only see people living 20 to a room with no running water or air conditioning during summer on tv.
And then they come to Qatar and experience it for themselves.
???? @ alhappydude
Its more like a shop row!.not mall.

LOOL…some of you people are truly raciest, talking about it as if your countries better!! Or as if you know better! Most knows that the life style they get here they only see it on posters or TV back in their countries. Anyway as simple as this…If you don’t like it or enjoy it...you know what to do…:)
about the parking.. no problem.. the parking is almost 8kilometers long.. the whole basement is parking area.. the building is 25m accross in the basement areas.. not to the mention the parking areas outside the building.. parking wont be a problem(i hope). and the building is not totally be comprised of shops, restaurants and botiques.. there will be offices and apartments also.. but i dont know if it fits the category to be called a "mall".. its more of commercial center..
life is not a destination, it always had been & always will be a journey.....
Because parks COST money, malls MAKE money.
a biggest aquarium and Ice Rink size of an olympic football ground....that's define Dubai mall....
Its very happy news that we are getting that long SHOPPING MALL but are they doing something to reduce OBESITY by making that long mall. WTH????
.
But why they are not concenterating on FAMILY PARKS. We really need these parks as found in U.A.E.
.
Who gave them such dumb ideas to prefer MALLS on PARKS.

Everybody wishes they could go to heaven but no one wants to die.
your comments for the labourers are very heart touching. *sigh*
Dmighty,
I enjoy the peace and tranquility that can only be found in a Dubai mall.
No one in your way, just empty corridors as far as the eye can see. It's like a desert island holiday because you know you won't run into anyone.
expats here in this region. Who will patronize these malls? Look at Dubai Malls now, no shoppers!
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
Well more retail units will mean more Lebanese and Phlipino retal assiatance. More UK, US outlets will I assume all will be happy except the poor labourers who build these complexes only to be deneid entry when they are complete..
oh one other thing is that I hope it's not going to have houses on either side of the strip! The combination of some residential areas (which limits commercial expansion) is always an issue here.

@fubar, I'm so glad that someone read it :P
In regards to office space, I imagine it's probably going to be affordable compared to westbay.
@nigel, it's already started a while back. You're right though, I want more hills!
there was another article way back if I remember which said that the plan is to update the industrial area to make it state of the art of along those lines.
__________________________
Mr. Q's Blog - A Qatari's view on Qatar.
Ngourlay: If you read what's written on the Barwa website, the development is 8km long. It will contain malls. It doesn't say that the development will be an 8km long mall.
The Barwa press release also talks up the residential component of the development, describing the residents as 'elite'.
Wow... I wish I was 'elite' enough to live in the industrial area.
Actually the press release has a lot of great lines:
"The QR 4 billion investment Barwa is making in this project is a direct response to the shortage of office space suffered in the country because of influx of private business organisations in Qatar."
Where to begin... shortage of office space? Because all the towers in West Bay are full? Influx of private businesses to Qatar? Riiiight...
"Barwa Commercial Avenue is in the centre of all business owing to its key location that has been carefully studied and deemed to suit the needs of local, regional and international entrepreneurs."
It's in the Industrial Area. It would take about an hour to get to West Bay in normal traffic, and you call this 'the centre of all business'?
"Commercial Avenue is also to feature impressive shopping malls, housing top retail names and brands. Specialist shops are to be set up in the area to cater to the needs of the elite occupants."
Hahaha.. Elite occupants. The Pearl be damned, apparently. The hip crowd is moving to the Industrial area.
"The arrival of international investors in Qatar only means they will find investments such Barwa Commercial Avenue appealing and a major determinant in their decision to invest in Qatar."
Is that sentence supposed to mean something? And what, pray tell, are investors coming to Qatar now for??
"A solution that will draw in Business Tourists"
That, boys and girls, is what we call an oxymoron.
i wish rather than this mall they made just 2 decent public parks for children ,with cycling area , 2 small football grounds a nice skating area , one volley ball court, one basket ball court , lots of tress, well maitained grass, umm i think i drink too much cofee this morning
Do this mall will have indoor Running Tracks for early morning Joggers (considering 9 months of hot sunny climate)!
to today's contaract sigining party....:)

Nice. It'll never happen. Like the underground football stadium and air-conditioned cycling track.
Given the sloth of the locals, I can't imagine many people walking briskly for an hour and a half to visit shops at each end. It's obvious people would drive. Do you think that will be taken into account when planning the roads???
Can I suggest one improvement? They build a hill in the middle and theme it as an alpine village. Qatar needs more hills.
with this huge mall, i need to ask my boss for a 10x salary increase for my shopping budget... :p
yo m ready ... its amazing ;)
No one is recession proof! Sorry.
It's just an another proof that Qatar is a recession proof country.

Why not concentrate on a more affordable housing project because affordable housing means more shopping opportunity. :)
I like your thinking..
there could be a :
Food City
Extremely expensive designers city
and ofcourse
China Doll City :)
but I don't plan on going there. I just drove by there this morning (Had to end my own personal boycott of Industrial Area and take my car in for a repair) and it is HUGE! Goes on and on forever. BUT it took me 90 minutes to get home. Way too long of a drive.
It's great that there are more choices in Qatar. If Qatar is to grow it needs to be in the news more often and sometimes that means that it needs to have grand structures.
Education City
Energy City
Sports City
Shopping City :P
Theres a very nice variation of projects in my opinion.

Oh great!!! Another place where bachelors couldn't enter ... and additional traffic congestion ...
In that case - Yay, a new 'mall' that's going to be different from the others! I'm so excited.
Tallg, this 'mall' will be different.
Firstly, it's *in* the industrial area, across the road from a Mowasalat bus station, car repair yards, laborer accomodation...
I have difficulty believing that it will be a 'mall' like Villagio or City Center. More likely, it is just 'commercial' space - wholesale and retail outlets focused on industrial clients.
But if talk about a new mall gets people excited, then go for it.

heey QL's i work in that project :) and BTW we are signing the contract today, the big party is today :D
the BCA project is due to 2012 and i hope we will finish on time since we r already ahead of plan!!!!!
The point people are making QS is that so far all the malls they've come up with have been carbon copies of each other. If they come up with something new then great, but no-one really expects them to.
well, i hope thats what happens :)
trio, are you sure it won't be "a winter sports complex or something like that" inside of this mixed development?
aviduser, i am pretty sure some 4-7 storey parking is included into this complex...
you guys just hear "Mall" and make the assumptions.. but the term of 'Mall' is much wider than only Zara, H&M and Starbucks... It also could be a SPA, a Movie theatre, some “winter complex”, "Wonderland", and God knows what else they might come up with.. so just wait and see..

Qatarisun, am aware of Barwa's other projects. I meant more on the Entertainment part. I thought we have enough of malls at the moment. Maybe something else would be great. Something like a nice big entertainment park? anything else...
Certaintly they will need people to fill up these malls for economics reasons, and having said so will be at the mercy of foreign expats and tourists. Given the prolong current recession, soon it will be another Dubai. Qatar needs to work hard to ensure things works out as planned. And when the buying stops, the malls will vanish.
whatever the size gonna be,we'll still have a topic called "things you can't buy (or find) in Qatar. n totally agree with Solidsnake9 & Fadi.I would prefer a winter sports complex or something like that instead of shopping malls.like monkeys;banana, banana and banana.they never fed up.whats the difference for God's sake?

Attitudes are more important than facts...
Well here how it goes!
#1 They will make the toilets too small to the point that u will run home to enter one!
#2 No Pay phones.
#3 They will forget to open a Cinema & Kids gaming zone & they will launch the project later which they will say it will finish in 2013 but it will only end in 2019
#4 They will fill it with signs (The rule of 2002 says No Smoking) people will use them to lean over while smoking!
#5 they will build an open air ice skating which will freeze the shit out of us!
#6 they will have family days on Weekends!
#7 They will have taxis all over the entrances & car lifts as well...
& the list goes on...
Cheers,
Fadi
will the bachelors can get in this time? DO they have family day too?
You know this is right out by the industrial area right ?
I thought is was primarily an outlet for a redesigned industrial area/Salwa Road.
Obviously that is the plan the reality will be a massive area with no parking and after a year the surface of the roads will have enormous pot holes and and will look like it's been there 50 years as no one will bother to maintain it.
You can actually see the fact it has no parking by the fact it's bordered on both sides by roads.
Isn't there a plan that his road will lead down the E ring and take the strain off Salwa with most of that being redeveloped.
That's if there is any money to do it.
equivalent to 110 football field? that's huge! i just wish there would be at least equivalent to 10 football field parking space.

whooopee!!...the most pressing need in Qatar right now...ANOTHER shopping mall...because of course the rest is in place isn't it?...like healthcare...we have a total of ONE big hospital that's hopelessly short of beds, doctors & nurses to take care of the population that's growing every day. Then there's public transport, buses that cover all major parts of Qatar & taxis that are available when one needs them & NOT 6 hours later & of course the numerous multi-storey car parks that dot the crowded areas of the city to ease the parking shortage...now since we have all of these essentials in place...we need that 8km. long shopping mall...because the mango's & starbucks in the already existing 5 malls aren't enough right?...so much for 'thinking ahead'...
someone tell them to build adequate parking!!! Ohh and access TO the parking!!
If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.

yes, blue moon, there IS something else in their list, and this was mentioned as well: Offices and Residential units.

Oh wait....that's what I said about the Asian Games too :-(
InshaAllah
Glad to hear that.
popcorngirl, barwa has just finished their project 'barwa housing' to accommodate low-income families. now a big housing project in industrial area for the labours is under construction... barwa is everywhere now! not only Doha, but also Spain, Dubai, Morocco, London, Moscow... all over the world.. :)
Another mall+offices+residential units from barwa are coming in the mid 2012 in doha downtown .. Qatar is growing.. I only hope they will improve the infrastructure, especially roads and parkings, around all these monsters..

kinokuniya and borders please ....
Kinokuniya
It is a mixed development comprising commercial complexes, showrooms and homes. It is envisaged that there will be around 600 retail units and about 850 residential units and offices.
Thee will also be food courts, restaurants and malls. It will probably be delayed to :)
going to incorporate the much vaunted air conditioned cycle track I wonder. It may be essential for shoppers to get around in one day.
Tallg. I wouldn't bother opening a sweepstake on the completion date. People could be too old to spend any winnings.
When is the family day will be ????!!!!!!
LoooooL
shit loads of money on yet another boring Mall for the elite and rich; why don't they build something for the workers that are are building this crazy country?
i agree with vivo.. i believe that they have already started to give away the tokens for the shops..
Then one day there will be more shops in Doha than the entire population of Qatar. Then all shops will have one dedicated customer- the shopkeeper himself!
There will be "customer cum shopkeeper service"
and "May I/You help You/me"
And Bob the customer will bargain with Bob the shopkeeper!
i guess these floor spaces are intended for the businesses currently stood in Doha Jadeed... since Doha jadeed area in the brink for demolition... upon transfering them thereafter, another set of works is planned for Old Doha town facelift.
>
Wow, fantastic, finally somewhere to do some shopping in Doha!
Must agree with Tallg though, I will place my bet on "unforseen delays" until 2013 (and a 1/2)
Sometimes you just can't help thinking that this country has it's priorities wrong. Oh well, whatever floats your boat I guess.
Shall we run a sweepstake on how far past 'mid 2012' the actual completion date will be?
At least somewhere else to go in Doha ...
qatar is growing very fastly.......all the best
And I bet it will have Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Mothercare, Carrefour, Next, Mango, River Island, Body Shop and the list goes on.
With less than 2 million people living in the country, who will visits these shops?
