Preparing for Winter in Qatar

By mohamed

If you were in Doha last winter you'll remember how cold it was. People were rushing to buy blankets and heaters which were eventually sold out. All the big supermarkets didn't have stock and people would snatch heaters up whenever they appeared.

Why am I reminding you of this? Well, I was at Carrefoure the other day and walked into the electronics section and saw a whole lot of heaters on display. And people were circling them and buying them up!

So I thought I'd give the Qatar Living community a heads up so you don't freeze in Doha this winter!

This winter has been the coldest I have experienced so far in the Middle East. It's my first year in Qatar but it has been colder here than I experienced previously in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Wish I had picked up a couple of those heaters - my place is an icebox at the moment!

Damn this thread is funny) it's as if it's going to be -30 in doha this winter))

You know the best part? It isn't knowing that your friends have your back. It's knowing that you have your friends' back.

"the ones my husband bought yesterday at FFC are 1500W and cost QR239 each. They are Black & Decker Oil Radiators" which plug into an electric socket.

However, maybe there are other types of heaters for sale.

Are we talking electric heaters here, or kerosene heaters? Just wondering, as in Japan we had both, although kerosene was clearly the commonly-used type. I am just wondering what to look for and stock up on.

Will also shop for an electric blanket for the bed. I'm really kind of a baby when it comes to being cold...

Yes I did, thanks - I may yet persuade hub to join me but can't confirm until we return from Oman. We are off there tomorrow until 1 November. That may be too late for the tickets, but it can't be helped :(

He said they also had 2000W and 2700W, but seems to think the 1500W are sufficient for our needs. We shall see :P

What about Qatar following suit to Dubai and create artificial slopes. I saw them on the news the other day looked like they were having fun.

On Christmas I had 20 people over for dinner (Turkey etc.) and we were all sitting huddled together to keep ourselves warm the whol evening, even though we had blankets. lol

QATAR - this December is all set to create another record for Doha with the HIGHEST RAINFALL IN THE PAST 42 YEARS, following incessant rains on the 7th. The total rainfall received this month till date has been 25mm, which is a record over the past 42 years. The country normally receives an average of 13mm rains in December every year.

Yes, everyone should get 'heatered up' before it's too late. Or have lots of winter clothes at the ready. Yay! Love dressing for winter. Now if only it would snow here then I would be zipping down the slopes in my element.

And Owen, watch out for snow avalanches...they can kill a person.

I remember people were buying the heaters off the trucks...They wouldn't even wait till they put them on display!!!!!!!!

By angel_eyes• 24 Oct 2007 12:51

A steady fall in maximum and minimum temperatures in the coming days. The northwesterly-northeasterly winds may also gain momentum, which means that Qatar is inching towards winter!!!

I just heard that the coming winter would be much colder compared last time due to global warming ;)

But I am more interested with the winter clothes SALE!!! Anybody have an idea when it will be and where??? :D
