as much as i respect other people opinion but the important question should be first what is your application? knowing your application you can decide what suits you better.
Plasma is better in fast motion and color. no matter what LCD do, they have the following problems:
1- Delay in moving pictures 5ms is the best LCD and in Plasma it's almost real time. therefore in fast action movies Plasma will perform way better.
2- Color: LCD does not have Dark / Black colors, if you compare Panasonic SD plasma with Full HD LCD from Samsung you will notice that in action movies e.g. Doom that you will not notice any details in the background images in LCD, e.g. if its black car on black road at night you will only see in LCD the lights of the car, when in the PDP you will see the road and all the details, of course you will not notice this in showroom because they know this and they will only play screen savers and slow bright movies in LCD.
Resolution; both of them go up to 1080p, however be aware from Samsung they are bloody tricky, they will sell you the 1080p on 24fps which is a big lieee it's not HD, its HD Ready.
Satellite images: Plasma is way better because the LCD nature of pixels upscaling from 520i to 1080p will make the LCD screen full of pixels and you will not appreciate the quality of the image. Plasma with Cathod light that work better.
Finally price: price of the plasma with ultimate specifications is way cheaper then LCD at the same specs, therefore Plasma win.
Only one catch on plasma do not buy it if your intending to watch pc screen on it, you have to be pro other wise you will end up leaving some burning images behind it.
i go for plasma. unless you will be using the blue ray or blu ray recorded then you may able to watch the most cosmetized picture of all. LCD may give you the clearest picture of all but as far as true color realism is concern for me plasma is the best.
If you're in the market for a big screen television like 50 50-inches and above -- then i'd suggest plasma as a safe bet. Plasmas give you more bang for your buck at the big end of town, and while LCDs can give you better resolution, plasma still has the edge in terms of picture quality. One other thing to look for, whether you opt for plasma or LCD, is an integrated tuner -- many TVs still have analogue tuners, which look pretty terrible on a large screen. Try to get a model with an inbuilt HD tuner if you can.
At the smaller end of things (15" to 42" TVs), LCD is the only way to go if you want something slim and tasteful.

I do agree, nothing matches the picture quality but it is good if you are planing the TV for a short term.
