Our bubble has been burst!

I've been so excited at the thought of a mall opening a minute's walk from my compound, little did I realise it was the "first family mall" people have been talking about :-(

I went there last night for a mooch about with hubby just to check it out and see what's available. We were both ecstatic at the thought of being able to purchase anything and everything from a mall practically on our doorstep not realising it was a family only mall as it was Friday yesterday.

This morning, hubby decided to pop out to the mall whilst I was still in bed to buy some fresh bread for breakfast. He was refused entry being told this is a family only mall...although 3 men in thobes walked in before him. What gets to me is how happy the security guards were refusing entry to a white man - obviously they were on a power trip, yet they still didn't have the balls to say no to the Arabs. I know some of you are going to bang on about other nationalities not being allowed on a Friday in malls, but my hubby and I are are against that too, so please refrain from your negative comments!

As most women will know, we need to be able to send our men out when we run out of milk or have a craving for chocolate and can't be bothered to go ourselves. The thought of having to get my backside off the sofa to do my own shopping doesn't sound too appealing...

Our bubble has been burst..:-(

FYI..hubby has been in numerous times since without being stopped...so I haven't needed to go myself - yippee!

Also, there's nothing to write home about in there, I wouldn't travel to go, it's just convenient for us as it's walking distance.

I went to the mall with my family. We are not missing out on anything. Shops are nothing to be excited about. Let them have it.

I read the article about the opening, and it specifically said singles of any kind will not be allowed.

I believe if you put that in place, it should be men or women who are single. Thats it.

Just talking to one of our reporters that covered the opening of the this particular mall.

He had asked the manager about the family only concept and the answer was that for the next week or so, since not all the shops are fully completed yet, they cannot implement it since workers will be coming in and out, but after that, they will be very strict.

So time will tell.

I think a mall for naked single women only should be started. This will allow women of all nationalities shop as god intended without being looked on by rapist men. (Except for men in thobes who the secuirty guards will be too scared to stop)

Tinkerbell10...sadly...go back to where you come from...coz the definition of anything in Qatar has no bearing from any of your perspective, wherever you come from. You don't matter and you don't seem to want to assimilate. You don't get it.

You don't get it that there is bias wherever we claim to be from.

Better go home now and fix the bias in your place first.

I said no, I can not give you an example.

If "an employer can shut you down and ship you out at his whim without reason", they can shutdown a poor guard if someone comes and complains to his employer that he lets in a white guy or stops an Arab.

The case you know personally happened to an educated and professional person, what about the guards probably with limited skills and education, how he would defend himself?

Family Only means whatever that conforms to their family values and behaviours - which include single unaccompanied women in abayas.

Tinkerbell10, stop hijacking this thread with the singles thing. This thread is about what constitutes family only. It is evident from this thread that what is defined as family only is clearly up to the locals, which means that even the NRI hired as the family driver wearing a jubah can enter freely.

Knowing that case personally I can tell you it didn't happen because the person treated Qataris & Non Qataris equally, irrelevant to the argument.

No I am not saying quote from media but tell me about something that happened to a friend or a friend of a friend or any random talk you heard..

Can you give me one example where someone lost his job because he treated Qataris & Non Qataris equally?

No, I can not give you an example from the media or similar sources. However, I can give you an example that "an employer can shut you down and ship you out at his whim without reason"

ok WK, let me redifine "family" definition:

meaning of "family" in a family day is : couples (male & female) of any nationality, single women (preferably pretty ones) and locals (all types- single double triple........).

Now this is "The Rule" of land and we ought to follow it, don't like it? you know what to do!!!

I've just crawled out from under a rock...sheesh! Where is this mall? when was it opened? Is the supermarket any good? does it have a name besides "Families only" though that does sound sadly funny. Anyways yeah I doubt it'll be much success. It might just end up like all the random hypermarkets scattered about, Allahu alam.

I understand there is a bigger problem. And I also know that challenging or confronting or what ever you do with the security guards would not help solving the bigger problem.

To resolve the bigger problem, it requires people with bigger balls, to address it at much higher level. Surely it can not be resolved at security guard level.

I am talking about the mentality problem which is bigger than the issue on hand..

Ah well forget it..

Let people walk all over you your entire life as stopping them won't solve any problem.

Perving at other's wife is ok apparently, they didn't think about the loan back home then..

Can you give me one example where someone lost his job because he treated Qataris & Non Qataris equally?

One, not asking for more than that.

This thread started with stopping a white guy while letting 3 Arabs in.

So, what these poor guys should do? Stop the Arabs or let the white guy in, then get sacked and deported. Would that help to solve the slavery problem?

Saying I have bigger balls, would that help to solve the slavery problem?

It happened yesterday at City Center. The Security Guard did not stop 2 white men who were in burmuda (chaddi) and vest (baniyan), but he had problem allowing me in to the mall. It clearly shows this country have different rules based on color and race. I went there to buy an ipod touch and ended up in a helpless situation. When I asked the guard how the white men allowed to enter then his answer was that only families r allowed on fridays. I did not understand this..hooo may be those 2 white men r infact husband and wife (????)...

My question to you is not about entrance to a stupid hypermarket..

You posted this

"Now, if you come from a poor village in Nepal, paid 2000 USD or so to get a job in Doha, which you can earn 300 USD a month. You hope to pay back your bank loan and save some money after 2 years of hard work. Would you still risk stopping an Arab guy and lose your job next day? What will you do to pay back bank loan?"

Read more: http://www.qatarliving.com/node/1605784#ixzz1D4Wb00p3

So every single person who has an outstanding loan back home and needs the job should never stand up to any kind of exploitation thinking how will he pay back loan?

Thinking like that allows some people to abuse their employees and I hope nobody thinks like that.

You work, you get paid.. Nobody is giving out money for free.

By Nobita• 5 Feb 2011 11:41

I don't want to see them continue as slaves. Do you want to see them sacked, deported, then faced the bank loan?

I'm not in favour of slavery, but I don't want to see those "slaves" lose their jobs, their money and their life just because they want to have big balls.

If people think they have big balls, they should go after the ones who make the rules to change the rules, to eradicate slavery, not after the slaves.

TB, not very long ago there were signs stating "Chinese and dogs not allowed".

It is unfashionable and politically incorrect nowadays to state who or whom is not allowed anymore.

So, to stop a human wave of foreign bachelors, what better way to state it than "Family Only". Succinct & precise.

That's not down to the poor security guys. If you really want to challenge the rules, the name of the rules and so on, please challenge the people who make up these rules, who named these rules, if your balls are big enough, of course.

Snessy... tell hubby darling to go to Lulu...lol

... This place has some stupid rules... why on earth would a shop stop a genuine customer? Beats me...

If they wanted to stop miscreants from entering the malls then they should put a small charge of QR 10 or Qr20 which can be redeemed on any purchase.

and those who want to make purchase below QR10 wouldnt go there...

As i've written in a previous thread , this shopping center caters specifically for conservative locals ( and others who share the ideology) who wants to shop in a more "Saudi style" shopping center. Cafes & restaurants all has partition to give privacy for the shoppers. Thus, don't expect any international brands or shops worth visiting.
