after villagio mall closed, there's no more space for parking in all malls in qatar... overcrowded City center, Landmark, The Mall, Lulu.... hope soon Ezdan mall and GUlf mall opens..
i don't understand the hostility against malls here in ql. it's probably because i'm a product of a decadent consumerist society. and yeah, that is bad. i practically grew up in sm city north edsa, the first of its kind i think in asia with the supermall concept. a place where they have it all. it was third largest in the world the last time i checked. i've always worked in buildings where there is at least one mall within easy walking distance. the malls here are small by normal standards imo. and yes, those malls are designed not just for plain shopping but also for people to hang out in. only city center is the closest thing to what i used to believe are normal malls. the small department stores make me feel claustrophobic. i always found landmark too small and boring.
this sudden closure of city center has been doing damage to my mind. i see it in how i've been posting in ql lately. it's also making me think that impulse buying is good after all. you never know when the mall you frequent will suddenly shut down and you'll never get to buy the things you've been eyeing for weeks. i'm now regretting not shopping at the stores that were on sale when i went there last week. i'm regretting not following my instincts when i felt like going there last thursday and putting off my shopping for friday. for that, i'm scared.
Last Saturday afternoon - Lulu Hypermarket opposite Landmark. Car park usual chaos but the store itself was quiet, clean and no queues at checkouts. Give it a try, peeps.
Plenty of things to do. Like go out to KFC for lunch, or take the kids to play at those big indoor playgrounds, go shopping at Carrefour, shop at Gap or H&M, have a nice snack at Paul cafe,......oh, all those things are at malls.
Oh my goodness. People might actually have to do something different on the weekends! I agree though, hell hath no fury like 10,000 LandCruisers and only 375 parking spaces.

Doha News says only the cinema is closed but the Mall is otherwise open.
I have been told that Landmark was built in two phases and only one has a sprinkler system. Can any QLer confirm the truth or otherwise of this?
Retro-fitting a sprinkler system (if CD require that to be done) will be a nightmare project.
^_^ i'm going crazy azi
of the guilty pleasures prevalent to pinoy expats in Qatar...lol (joke).

@Kiwi: You imply Doha has other things to do on the weekends? Especially considering the 45c heat?
Doha needs some attractions other than shopping malls and hotels.
Ezdan is opening soon
