There is a Booze Souq (Qatar Distribution Company) you will need permission from your employer/ sponsor and 1000QAR to get a licence.

This is the only way you can buy alcohol for consumption at home.

You cannot buy it in the local super markets . . .

There are pubs and restaurants here where you can buy/ drink alcohol for consuption on the premises. It's not cheap! You'll be looking at a tenna easily for a pint!

You also need a membership card for any of the drinking pubs/ clubs and your Qatari ID, this will set you back about 30QAR and must be produced everytime you show up at your local.

My friend and I are making it a sport to see how many different ID cards for bars we can collect . . . childish, but you have to make your own fun here.

There is also a bar at the rugby club, you will need membership for that too.

More than you asked, but I am sure everyone will be happy to answer your questions.

Thanks for the response guys, it does seem very expensive to go for a drink in a hotel! Is it possible to buy alcohol at the supermarkets and drink at home or do you have to have a license for this? I understand drinking is frowned upon but surely a few beers after a hard week at work is understandable.

Drinking any alcoholic drinks in Qatar is strictly prohibited although you can still have it inside the hotels. Well, prices varies in every hotel. A can of beer in Ramada will cost you around 21 riyals? not so sure. If you have the license, then you can buy at a lower price per box.

Its scary man, literally scary. Make sure you have a high paying job. It can be anywhere from 25 to 55 QR a pint. Convert that into a real currency and you won't want to drink!
