DOHA: The Seventh Diplomatic Bazaar organised by the Social Development Center (SDC) will open today at the Qatar Exhibition Centre under the patronage of H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned.
The official opening of the bazaar was conducted by the wife of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikha Noor bint Abdul Aziz Al Subaie earlier.
Around 41 embassies here, 35 companies and 30 families have put up booths at the Diplomatic Bazaar.
Najla Al Baz, secretary of the Marketing and Media Department of the SDC, said aside from the goods and products the 41 embassies and the 35 companies will be displaying, the Social Development Centre booth will display during the exhibition the handicrafts and other goods made by 30 underprivileged families the centre is assisting.
“These families are the families who have participated in our Modern Family Project at the Social Development Centre. They were taught how to do handicrafts and other stuff. During the exhibit, they will be displaying these, as well as accessories and abayas,” said Al Baz.
The three-day exhibit was organised by the SDC, under the patronage of H H Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned. Proceeds of the event will go to the SDC’s “Persistent Even If Small” Project. “We have prepared for this for a year and the participants have had meetings for quite some time as well, leading to this event,” said Al Baz.
The different embassies of Europe, East and South-East Asia, the US and the Middle East started setting up the booths yesterday, all of them showcasing the different specialties of their countries – be they hand-woven fabrics, food stuff or a skill which is known only in their place.
Suvat Hanafi Chirapant, Ambassador of Thailand to Qatar, said they will feature products and flowers of Thailand, which were shipped from their country days before the exhibit. “My wife and I went home to Thailand to bring back these goods. We also shipped orchids from back home and they just arrived two days ago. We had been preparing for two months.”
The Japanese Ambassador’s wife, Hiroko Kitazume, who was one of the ambassadors’ wives personally preparing for their booths for the exhibit, said they will be serving green tea with Japanese sweets for the guests of the Japan Embassy’s booth. The sweets would include the Japanese biscuits of double chocolat blanc and double chocolat au lait. Kitazume said they have also set up a table where guests can give their names and it will be written on fans using Japanese characters. The highlight of the booth is the bridal Kimono displayed at the side which is owned by the Japanese Embassy.
This year’s open market is based on the theme of “Sense and Beauty”.
