"Classic" restaurants and shops in Doha

Back in the good old days (1980s), there were these restaurants, do they still exist?

If they still exist, I would be grateful if you could provide their exact location:

1- Mat'am Affandi. Their falafel was profoundly amazing. Use to stop there for lunch after high school.

2- Caravan Cafe (it had international buffet, near Pizza Hut and Dajaj Amriki), what is that location address? is it still there?

3- There used to be a Shawarma district, like a row of several shops next to one another with shawarma stands, do they still exist? where?

4- There also was a Juice district, a whole bunch of juice districts that sold fresh fruit juice and fresh smoothies, still there?

5- There was this place where my dad used to buy us local Qatari authentic "Majboos" the Qatari version of "Biryani". Any tips on where to get a small plate of Qatari majboos?

6- Sheraton used to have the best lunch buffet. I'm sure that has changed. Where do you get the best lunch buffet with different international variety?

thank you, you guys ROCK :)

what are the normal hours of these restaurants including Sheraton? I mean, what time do they close?

What about the shops?

Madinat Khalifa area.

Meshwar Al Khaleej

tel:487-6685

They do a great job with all local foods (mathrooba, margooga, machpoos...and around Ramadan they even carry harees and lo gematt too!).

lots more choice in Doha now mate...still far from enough IMHO but at least a lot more than before...Caravan is still in the same place but their quality has fallen significantly i must say...lots more buffets around because lots more fancy pants 5-star hotels around but honestly, for good food, the old stalwarts Doha Sheraton & Ramada still definitely the best in terms of food taste & value for money...tried the four seasons a couple of months back, pathetic,to say the least...

Do a search in QL for "shawarma". You'll find plenty!

Caravan still exists same place.

King of Chicken used to be my fav. place to get Shawarma :)

Now since things have changed there are so many places where you can try out and perhaps choose a new favorite place to eat. Something to keep you busy while you are here lol.

yes, Caravan near Ramada I remember now. Thank you.

You'll find me there in March :)

Too bad Rayyan restaurants don't exist anymore. What did they build in place of them? Where do you get shawarma now?

So no idea on Afandi restaurant? Their logo was a face with a big curly mustache

Any recommendation on where to get a great Qatari Majboos (Ghoozi / Mansaf)?

I'm not sure if anyone hangs around that long to be honest.
