Ive been living the "which SUV should i pic" era for quite a while, and was able to come up with the following guidlines:

1st, know what you want.

ex: looks, comfort, features, off road capabilities, then the money issues (value for money, resale value, running cost, etc)

2nd, research. youve got an endless amount of online reviews, even complaints etc.

3rd, test drive. and dont feel shy to put the machine to the max, thats why they have demo cars in the first place

4th, come up with the decision and go for it with no regrets. then add some personal touches to whatever you get, and make it feel like home. and in that case, you wont ever feel bad, cuz you could consider it, customized.

The nominees (off the top of my head):

nissan patrol

nissan pathfinder

nissan xterra

hummer H3

FJ cruiser

jeep wrangler

mitsu pajero

ok sorry im blanking out at the moment, but my working hours are over and im eager to leave the office.. so...

Heres how i would rank the top 3 if my highest priorities were power and comfort (not the looks):

1) patrol ofcourse

2) xterra

3) fj cruiser

Hope this helps,

thanks for the responses guys...now leaning towards the pajero and patrol....will take a look at both of them.....are there any other SUV's in this range (like VW/Audi/other european/american brands) that come anywhere close to the pajero or patrol?

pajero/montero/shogun waz a cool machine till 1999.. not anymore (no offence.. just personal view) engine kill the thrill in the new ones. 3.8 ltr single door m/t is an exception... and the resale value is not gud as nissan's. and maintenance is not that simple as nissan's...

and patrol's boxy look has future payoff. i've used almost all the 4x4's. and to me, nissan patrol is the best suit overall.

If you look what is the main suv's being driven. They are Toyota land cruiser then the nissan patrol, then the pajero. Personally the pajero is a great vehicle. It is comfy, has nice features like the ice cooler. We have had ours off road and she is really capable. the stonger engine would be better though. We have the 3 liter and would rather go for the 3.8. If you look in the classifieds, they seem to hold their value as well. Ours came with a maintenance plan and so far it has been well looked after, although she has to be in over night once or twice.

if you have a budget of 160 000 go for nissan patrol 4800 vtc. tough, reliable, punchy and comfy. after all, it has the best resale value here. and u can sell it faster than you buy it.. moreover, it's one of the easiest car to maintain... and don't forget about the off road ability. it has two rock hard live differentials and manual diff lock to play with.

best of luck:)
