I know Ford better than most as a Ford Exploder was responsible for my daughters death, the vehicle disentigrates so if you are lucky enough to be seat belted you also die the roof caves in to your skull. I know for a fact Ford knew for 10 years the Exploder was killing people and did nothing, they do not recall vehicles, so much for safety. You should not die if you have a flat tire! But hey you choose the safety for your family I can only pass on what I know!
Visit the Insurance Inst. for Highway Safety --> http://www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx on the right hand side you can search for a partuclar vehicle. It gives you all the rating from the safety point of view.
Personally I do not know about the Five Hundred.
Btw,before moving to Qatar, I was working for an Auto Insurance company and from there I know the new Edge, new Taurus, Fusion, Escape (even Obama used to drive one)they are one of the best kind. @EVE So all Ford's vehicles are bad, I strongly disaggree with that. I have been driving a Ford Windstar minivan in Canada, that's one the best one I ever had. One time we drove 2500 KM one way with my whole family. Now with the safety issue, I had one accident with the Windstar when my 2 yrs twins were on the back seats. God's mercy,Nothing happened with us, but the Crown Victoria who hit us was gone!!
I know all newer Ford vehicles are really good, specially I have very impression about Fusion,Escape and Edge. :)
Pros: Comfy, lots of room for those whose height is a problem
Cons: no power in the engine, brakes were recalled already!! The Transmission is a CVT FLOP!!
Do not buy this car, the transmission is failing on average at 50k miles. You will need to replace the valve which controls the fluid in the transmission, price? $1,100 (and it's a band-aid, you will have to do it every 20k after that).
If you don't catch it in time, you get to buy a whole new transmission. By the way your brake pads are recalled because they left them outside and they got water damage!! Quality is Job none!!

If you want a vehicle that is unsafe buy Ford all their vehicles have problems but they don't recall cars they pay for Dead People, Ford Pinto, Ford 15 Passenger Vans, Ford Crown Victoria and the best in imploding the Ford Exploder. If you want your family to be safe buy anything but Ford.
You dont find many of these around. As far as I know the five hundred has been rebaged as the Taurus. The Five hundred was only in production for a couple of years or so. In a way this is a good thing as it should be improved over the older generations. Bear in mind though resale value will be shite as no Indian will touch it.
As for servicing I've no idea what it is like, but I can't imagine it is any crappier than anywhere else, unfortunately customer service does not exist in Qatar.
