The cheating practices of Tax drivers goes on
I came back from a holiday only to be received by a Cab driver who continue to represent a community of cab drivers who would not hesitate to lie and cheatfrom customers even in broad day light. (Al Ijarah Cab. License plate no. 750). He had long hair and was on of Asian origin. To him, at 7.45AM, it is still Night Rate according to him and would not switch it to Day Rate. I got off the taxi quickly, but he used his big size and big voice to bully me. I knew I would not be stand a chance against him, so I ended up paying him. But I hope I to post this and let all know of what is still going on in Doha. I wonder how long will it take for the authorities to mandatorily fix automatic meters with sensors. Its more than a year now that I began hearing that and it looks like they are enbaling this to happen at the same time, just like the sale of illegal chewy tobacco in Al Wifaq street, Old Ghanim area.
MM , britexpat & Alsharq good fun guys , lol.
@Molten...
Who wouldn't love to live in Dubai instead?
My Cuban Shotputter used to make the sensors go crazy
I am willing to leave Qatar even for 19,000 UAE Dirhams at very short notice ............. ........... .............
My point exactly. Dubai is like a whole world apart. Here, I feel everything is plastic (meaning artificial or made to appear like its good from the surface, but once you are here, it won't take long for anyone to find out the real face value)
Ya , One thing is sure in Dubai nobody will ever think about cheating .................. ..............................
sorry 20,000 local bux and not 20,00
sorry 20,000 local bux and not 20,00
sorry 20,000 local bux and not 20,00
Haa Haa Haa.. Everyone can laugh on it, but dont be surprised if somebody else also post about this. That is the lastest technique used by the drivers. I would move to Dubai in a Jiffy, if i got a good offer. If you know anyone offering 20,00 for an office administrion, then hook me in. As you know by now, i cannot stand those who lie or cheat. I am straight forward and been working in the gulf for more than 15 years. I speak in Arabic fluently. I prefer working with a boss who is from the west. Any one out there?
He has wandering thoughts .......... for sure ..................
Sit with the legs up request is really funny & never heard anything like that ! ........ His { taxi driver's } mind is focused somewhere else for sure ........... !
There are so many folks who moved from Dubai to Qatar ......... they are happy & adepted very quickly to the local conditions ........
AlSharq, Plan to buy a black car & black goggles ........ never look at drivers on the left or right just drive straight ............
Your life will be much easier & pocket heavier .................. .............
Brit...I don't own a car and I hate driving here, simply because I feel most owners have a 4WD and they are bullies on the road. They honk, taunt or flash lights the moment they see a salon car or a pick-up, assuming them they are all of low-income group or drivers working in some homes. I have to therefore depend on cabs and that's why I feel this issue needs to be addressed. I always feel relaxed when i am in Dubai. May be I should consider dumping this place for good and moving there
Talk about bad meters, one of the drivers once told me that that there are some cabs whose meters are tampered and they run fast, even when they are put on day meter. Even the supervisors who distribute the work schedules, knows about it. Usually the drivers try to wake up early and go get the cars which run faster, as they can reach their targets earlier. Obviously, the driver who spoke to me , was someone who was not favored for such cars. The old taxi system really sucks and they like to continue sleeping on it. I like the services or the Cabs with yellow and grey-black tops. Their meters are good and the seats are fitted with sensors, but there are a few bad apples even there. Some drivers press on some menu and the systems awaits for him to make a choice. The smart driver does not make the choice and that is where the sensors I think also dont work. He uses such time to pick up and drop anyone of his choice and charge them with any amount of his choosing. Another cab driver, once asked to sit at the back with my legs up, making sure my thighs dont touch the senser. He is ofcourse picky of whom he asks. He only asks the lean people whose can do such a thing, but of course he has to be stupid too. I am lean (not skinny) but not stupid for sure. The next time someone asks you to do that, I want you take a picture of it and post it here on Qatar Living and lets everyone see
I can see you feel strongly about this.
In the beginning, I never understood why the meter ran so fast in some and why slow in some, until an honest driver told me about the 0 and 1 thing. 1 means 'Day' meter scale and 0 (Zero) means 'Night' meter scale. Those who do not know about this are the ones who get screwed and ending up paying more than half the usual price. Some even blacken the screen where this reading appears using black sticker or black marker pen. If you ask them to switch it to 1 from 0, he will either throw you a temper tantrum and give you a ear full, or simply lie to saying 'it won't switch'. Yeah right! What a bull!!
What the drivers are getting paid is not my problem. It is the company's problem. Why cannot they do it like Dubai Taxi's? The drivers end up taking their frustrations on us passengers and we are the ones having to take the brunt of it. We don't have a money plant at home either.

I would say don't ever use a taxi. Because of the bad treatment and financial burden all taxi drivers can become suicidal one day and then you're in trouble. Even pilots can become surprisingly unaccountable.
I had very bad experiences with al million taxi so many times...
1. meter runs very fast even in day time like turbo mode.
2. we have to request them to go particular locations.
Try looking at things from the taxi driver's point of view. From what I have gathered from Karwa taxi drivers to whom I have spoken during my trips, they are required to pay the company QR 250 for the duration allotted to them to drive their taxi (I guess it is 10 hrs). The cost of petrol is also on them. With so many taxis on the roads, the competition is tough and possibly there may some days when they do not get to find many passengers to meet even the above amount, let alone take something home. This may be a reason for not going by the rules of the book. However, their poor behavior is definitely not acceptable but one should keep in mind they are usually not a well-educated lot.
Asharq, QatarLiving practices censorship. Are you surprised?
brit, that requires a huge and complicated electronic system. I don't think that they can do that without foreign help. And then it will cost immense amounts of money.
Wondering where my comments on sale of illegal chewy tobacco has all gone. I dont see them anymore. Wondering if my posts are being watched or screened out deliberately
The simple answer is for the government to take over the companies , pay the drivers a decent wage with a bonus system and track their work
I feel your pain, alsharqadv, as I too got over charged by this Taxi Drivers (Al Million) but certainly we should not blame them, but rather pity them - they have poor salary and poor working conditions, being cheated by the company who employed them. What the govt. should do is to make drastic steps to ensure proper work ethical standards are being followed and a min. salary should be enforced. But Alas, Qatar gov't. is so busy building its Stadiums, Grand Highways, Extreme Buildings that they forgot the most important thing - Expats who contribute a lot to this beloved Country.
TRUST NO ONE!
Imagine, a country where fuel cost is less than 1 QR charging a minimum of 10 QR on taxis for paying few pennies to its staff. (am not belongs to any taxi/travel company).
The truth is, customer is always beggars. Service provider is the right always.
Private taxis are illegal and should be avoided
if you have the taxi bill .. you can put complaint in karwa by attaching the bill . hope they take some action
i also face same situation many times with al-million taxi .. hope Karwa take some action. I believe if karwa taxi services are good and honest then automatically illegal drivers will reduce .
The taxi drivers, Yes I agree. Even the Private cab drivers are not far away from that. They ask for double the prices for even short distances, like as if they are running a legal limousine service.
People are really bad these days.
