Journalists seem incapable of differentiating between correlation and causation.

You might as well write an article about how smokers earn less than non-smokers, or how Jerry Springer fans earn less than Jeremy Paxman fans. Giving up smoking, or switching your viewing habits is unlikely to affect your wages because they don't cause the observed correlation.
