Unfortunately you are guessing right 20,000 is about price for a good compound villa although you maybe lucky at 18,000. Please use a reputable real estate there are a few British here as you need to ensure you have a good landlord. I think compounds are best with children as they integrate and make friends alot quicker.
The main British schools here (only ones I would consider) are Doha English Speaking School, Doha College and Park House School. Places are tight and I would strongly advise you apply immediately if the job falls through you have lost nothing. You can apply to schools on line. With regards to fees I would allow for between 24,000 and 30,000 per annum. Your company should be paying these fees for you so make sure its included in your package.
You can purchase cars cheaply here and fuel costs nothing. You insure the car not the driver and it is roughly 5% of the value of the car. When buying new you normally get the first year insurance free. You will be unable to purchase a car until your Residency Permit is through.
If you want anymore information email me and I will try to give you as much information as possible.
