Years ago, during the Aparthied years, I used to take shifts standing on the permanent demonstration outside the South African Embassy in London. The picket was manned 24 hours a day for about 15 years.
When Mandela walked out of jail I hoped I would never again see a situation where people were segregated on the grounds of race and skin colour.
Yet here I am, twenty years later, living in a country where people belonging to certain races are being openly whipped in the streets for doing nothing more than trying to social with their friends.
In South Africa there used to be signs all over the place saying "No Blacks". I hope to God we never see that sort of thing here.
This situation just makes me sad.
