You have known all the Ameircan Ambassadors here since '99? Well, if you have KNOWN all of them, perhaps you are much higher up the food chain than me and my family.
I have not lied about anything. And there was nothing random about it. You want the whole story? I will leave out names to protect the innocent but here's the gyst of what happened.
I'm a college student. As a college student my sponsor was unwilling to provide sponsorship for my wife. So she got a job. She is a certified teacher, so she got a job for a school here in Doha. She was the only American working at the school. There were a few British girls, but most were/are South Asian. As is typical with this place, the school turned out to be a very abusive organization. For example, all the girls that work for this school are provided with housing and whatnot. They all share a few villas. The western girls have their own private rooms, are allowed to drive, etc. The South Asian girls make 1/6 as much as the western girls, work longer hours and more days, are not allowed to drive, have an 8pm curfew, and are required to do free babysitting for the owner and the owner's friends on their one free day - Friday. One of the girls at the nursery is engaged. She wants to get married. The school will not let her off work while her embassy is open so she can get married. She has been trying to get married for over a year and they won't let her.
Are you getting the picture? The school was engaged in what amounts to slave trading, the same as we all see every time we simply drive down the road.
For reasons along these lines, because they were attempting to do similar things to my wife, she quit. She game them three months notice, well beyond the 1-month notice required by her contract, and quit her job. When she quit they got mad and told her to leave and never come back. So she comes home in tears about the whole thing. Before quitting I worked things out with my sponsor and they agreed to sponsor her on a family visa.
I then contacted her employer about getting the visa transferred and they wouldn't even take my calls. They would hang up on me, etc. After playing this game for a while they then said they would have her kicked out of the country and "blacklisted" so that she could never enter again.
At this point we went to a lawyer to see if that was even possible, and got conflicting answers from two different lawyers. But I was sufficiently convinced that it wasn't something I should fear. So we told them to go ahead and asked to have her visa cancelled.
They refused to cancel her visa. They said they wanted QR 18,000 to cancel her visa and let her go. I refused, at which point they then started to threaten her physically. They implied that they would have somebody kidnap her or that they would lie to the police and have her thrown in a deportation facility until we paid. Things along these lines.
I refused to pay this and went to the US Embassy and the NHRC (Human Rights Committe) on Salwa Road. I started a case, filled out a bunch of paperwork, etc. They strung me out for 3 weeks. After three weeks of talking to them by phone and email I went back in person to get an update. When they opened my file all the paperwork had magically disappeared. Poof, it was simply gone. The file was there with my name, but no paperwork.
So I had to start from scratch all over again. So I redid the paperwork and submitted it again. This time I went in person every other day to check on the status. I was finally assigned to a case officer.
The officer was a Qatari woman and this was her response. Her words - I kid you not. Speaking to my wife who was with me she said, "You have no right to quit your job. It is your employers right to do whatever they want since you want to leave. You must pay them."
Now understand this. Is is the sole job of the NHRC to plea FOR the plaintif - for the worker, the laborer. Their whole job is to simply prepare a letter requesting an exit permit which is sent directly to the Ministry of Interior. She refused to write a letter and instead ordered us to do whatever the employer asked.
The man I originally met and talked with at the NHRC is Egyptian. I contacted him after getting the run around from our case officer. He then explained something to me. He said the NHRC is currently undergoing a process of Qatarization. Historically it has been run by Egyptians, with the idea that they would be more fair as a third party. That is changing with the goal of better serving the interests of the Qatari employers. This is what he said to me. Are you understanding this? The whole point of the NHRC is to be a bloated bureacracy which purports to serve the interests of laborers when in actuality its a front for keeping the slaves as slaves.
So the NHRC would not help at all.
Three times during this whole fiasco we went to the US embassy. Once my wife went, once I went, and a third time I directly contacted the RSO - Regional Security Officer - through my friend who was a Marine guard.
Both when my wife and I went, nothing happened. We talked to a consular officer who was a clueless bafoon. This lady didn't know her butt from a whole in the ground. She suggested that I go to the police. I said, well, I don't speak Arabic so specifically where do I go and who do I talk to? She had no answer. No other suggestion. She said there was nothing they could or would do.
The RSO contacted a lot of people for me. Props to him, but in the end he said he couldn't help because it wasn't a matter for the police. If it was a police issue, he could help. But since it was a labor dispute, he had no power.
So we paid the QR 18,000, she flew to Bahrain and came back, and now is living her on a family visa.
What does this have to do with Islam? A hell of a lot! Islam is the ideology that has them treating people like slaves and animals. If you think otherwise you are profoundly ignorant. Look around you man. Read the Koran. What is happening in Sudan? What is happening in Nigeria? What is happening in Iraq? What is happening in Pakistan? What is happening in EVERY SINGLE MUSLIM COUNTRY? Slavery, Terrorism, etc., all in the name of Alla, Islam, Sharia Law, etc.!!! How can you say the way they treat people has nothing to do with Islam?
